Marvel Studios' Spider-Man Show Gives Tom Holland's Peter Parker An Origin Story

Tom Holland has been the face of Peter Parker in the MCU since he debuted in 2016, and now finally Marvel Studios is giving the character an origin story. Spider-Man: Homecoming was Holland's first solo debut as the web-swinging hero back in 2017, but thanks to two different movies tackling his origin in the preceding 20 years, the MCU decided to jump into Parker's story after he had already embraced his powers and started operating as a hero. Now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day feels like the closest thing to an origin story that we can expect to see from Tom Holland's Spider-Man, as he tries to build a new life in the years since people forgot that Peter Parker ever existed at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. But beyond that, there is a project made by Marvel Studios that is actually covering Parker's origins, and following a brand-new iteration of this hero as he tries to juggle school, relationships, family, and his newfound powers. This is, of course, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which began streaming on Disney+ in 2025. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Takes Peter Parker Back To Basics Image via Disney+ Season 1 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man introduces audiences to a 15-year-old version of Peter Parker who is a freshman at Midtown High School. At the start of the series, this Peter doesn't have any powers, but when a supernatural incident opens up a massive void in the sky and lets a strange monster through, Peter ends up getting bitten by a small spider that went unnoticed in the surrounding chaos. From there, we watch as Peter gets familiar with his new powers and begins to figure out ways to use his gifts to help those in need. Despite his inexperience, this version of Spider-Man faces a number of powerful rivals, including Doc Ock, Scorpion, and Norman Osborn. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Is The Closest The MCU Has Gotten To A Spidey Origin Story Image via Disney+ While Tom Holland's Spider-Man was fairly inexperienced when he began working with the Avengers, to the point that he was still wearing a homemade suit that was cobbled together before Tony Stark gave him an upgrade, audiences never got to see this version of the character get bitten by a spider, lose his Uncle Ben, or make the decision to become a hero. All of these elements are integral parts of the story for Peter Parker, but Tom Holland assumed the role and began playing a more confident and courageous version of the hero than many people would expect from a more immature version of Peter Parker. That being said, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is an excellent origin story and one the MCU can be proud of. Technically, this story is not set in the MCU, but having been created with the oversight of the same Marvel Studios that is in control of the rest of their sprawling cinematic universe, there are clearly elements in common between these two worlds. And more than that, Holland's performance as Spider-Man for the six years that preceded the show's debut probably influenced the series in at least some small way. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man Is Almost The Original Spider-Man Story Image via Disney+ One of the most fascinating aspects of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, though, is not the fact that it might adapt some parts of the MCU, but the reality that this series has gone to great lengths to pay tribute to the original Spider-Man comics from way back in 1962. From the art style of the show resembling Steve Ditko's original artwork, to some still frames from the first season that literally bring those early comic book pages to life, this series is a wonderful homage to what came before, while also breaking new ground and exploring the story from a fresh perspective. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man includes new characters, new origins for characters, and intriguing updates to the way that characters move along their individual arcs. However, the show does so in a way that feels like a perfect bridge from the past to the present, and while it may not be Tom Holland's origin story, it is a fantastic addition to the Marvel lineup of shows.
