Marvel Studios Is Seemingly Searching for Its New Wolverine

When Fox first brought the X-Men to the big screen over 25 years ago, Wolverine was front and center. Of course he was. The adamantium-clawed hero was one of Marvel’s most popular characters, and it was a no-brainer to make him a key part of the team. In 2028, Marvel is bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. Seven heroes (and one villain) have been cast so far, and, as it stands, Wolverine isn’t among them. Yet. But the casting could be coming, and it would set up the future of Marvel for many years ahead. According to The InSneider, none other than Jeremy Allen White, star of The Bear and The Mandalorian and Grogu, has met with Marvel Studios about playing the role. It’s unclear how the meeting went and, when io9 contacted Marvel for comment, we didn’t hear back. Which could mean it’s true, or it could mean it’s so ridiculous it doesn’t even warrant a response. Whatever the case, it does seem likely meetings are happening, which means a new Weapon X could be right around the corner. However, as widely expected, the story teases that the character doesn’t play a big role in this first film, but the appearance would set him up for a much, much larger role in the future. There is one other major hurdle still standing in the way of casting a new Wolverine, though. The original Wolverine, Hugh Jackman, still portrays the character in the Marvel Studios canon. Across many, many multiverses, in fact. 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine identified him as an anchor being, a crucial entity that holds a multiverse together. That’s not something that can just be ignored. So, there’s still plenty of story between now, with Jackman still as Wolverine, and later, with someone else. But it seems very likely the wheels have begun spinning. And maybe they’ll steer towards Allen White. Or maybe not. Who do you see as the character? Want more io9 news?
