Marvel Officially Changes Gambit Forever

Remy LeBeau's troubles began after he stole the Left Eye of Agamotto from the dragon Sadurang, an artifact that came with some serious consequences. The Eye eventually caused a demonic personality known as Wyvern to manifest within Gambit, and his condition has only gotten worse as Gail Simone's current run has continued. Most recently, Gambit physically transformed into Wyvern, sprouting wings and a tail as the entity increasingly took control. Naturally, Rogue isn't willing to sit around and watch her husband disappear. Uncanny X-Men #33 sent the couple away from Haven House in search of Gabriel the Devil-Hunter, hoping the supernatural expert could remove Wyvern and restore Gambit. Marvel's solicitation for the next chapter ominously warned that the cure could be "far worse than the disease," while also teasing the arrival of a mysterious figure known as Repent. Unfortunately for Rogue and Gambit, Marvel wasn't exaggerating about the consequences. Spoilers ahead for Uncanny X-Men #34. Gambit's New Transformation Isn't Going Away Image via Marvel Comics Uncanny X-Men #34 reveals that removing Wyvern isn't enough to turn Gambit back into the man he was before. Repent ultimately attacks the entity possessing Remy and helps break its hold over him, but when the ordeal is over, Gambit's demonic appearance remains. Remy emerges with gray skin, horns, enormous wings, a tail, and clawed hands. More troublingly, Gambit realizes that what happened to him is no longer simply the result of an outside entity controlling his body. He tells Rogue that he can feel the changes coming from inside himself, suggesting his experience with Wyvern has fundamentally altered him. Rogue immediately wants to find a way to change him back, but Gambit isn't ready to do that. Instead, he decides he needs to get away and figure out exactly what he has become. Rogue refuses to let him face that journey alone, and the couple heads for Barcelona in search of Nightcrawler. For now, Marvel isn't treating Gambit's new appearance as a one-page transformation that disappears as soon as Wyvern is defeated, either. The teaser for Uncanny X-Men #35 explicitly describes an X-Man facing a "terrifying transformation" and warns that the cure could once again prove worse than the disease. So while Gambit may finally be free from Wyvern's control, Remy LeBeau is very clearly not back to normal. Whatever the entity did to him has left a physical mark, and Uncanny X-Men is only beginning to reveal what that means for one of Marvel's most beloved mutants. Uncanny X-Men #34 is on sale now.
