At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel announces the next stage in the Avengers' story after their 2026 crossover concludes. The Avengers have always drawn their appeal from the idea of superhero worlds colliding under a single banner. Their individual stories combine corners of the Marvel Universe that would otherwise rarely intersect, each with their own supporting casts, villains, and settings. When their journeys overlap, the Avengers become far more than the sum of their members. Secret Empire explores Steve Rogers' corrupted legacy after Hydra's takeover, and in a similar manner, Blood Hunt introduces a worldwide vampire invasion led by a Varnae-possessed Blade. Marvel's rotating spotlight allows every hero to be central to the Marvel Universe at some point, though a few key figures are bound to be protagonists more often than others. Marvel's Next Era Is The Iron Age Iron Man Takes Center Stage Following Armageddon At San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Marvel Comics reveals the next chapter in the Armageddon event with the cover for Avengers Armageddon #5, which features the overpowered David Colton flying over the unconscious bodies of Earth's Mightiest Heroes; and Captain America #16, which features Captain America being attacked by Mephisto. Most importantly, Marvel unveils a first glimpse at Armageddon's aftermath, with an image of Iron Man standing on the rubble of the Avengers' headquarters. Marvel accompanies the image with the sentence "the future is iron" and the confirmation that Armageddon will lead to "a new Iron Age for Marvel Comics." Marvel's Armageddon event doesn't intend to unleash an actual apocalypse upon Earth-616, but it does promise to shake the world to its core. After Red Hulk's conquest, it may be up to Tony Stark to either rebuild civilization or redesign the superhero community from scratch. What's for certain is that the Avengers will be disbanded again, and that the X-Men will take their place in Maximum X-Men. Whether this overhaul also entails the deaths of one or multiple Avengers remains to be revealed in the pages of Armageddon and all its tie-in titles. Iron Man Deserves To Be At The Center Of The Marvel Universe It's Been A Long Time Since Iron Man Receives The Spotlight Iron Man is currently a key member of the Avengers, and his 2026 solo run has been consistently high-quality. However, Marvel's largest storylines have revolved around the X-Men, Venom, Spider-Man, and the Hulk, leaving Iron Man in a supporting capacity. It has been a long time since Iron Man last became the heart of a crossover event on the scale of Civil War and Avengers vs X-Men. During the 2000s and early 2010s, Tony Stark stayed at the center of Marvel's political and superhero landscape, and he often influenced the direction of multiple overarching arcs at once. Likewise, seven years have already passed since Iron Man last headlined an MCU movie. Since Avengers. Endgame concluded the MCU's Infinity Saga, Iron Man has only appeared in cameo appearances or secondary roles in live-action MCU installments, animated productions, and video games. Considering Iron Man spent a considerable fraction of the 2000s and 2010s as the face of Marvel in pop culture, Tony Stark deserves to return to a central role in Marvel Comics every once in a while.
