Marvel Just Officially Reopened One of the X-Men's Most Controversial Debates

It was a nice few years when it seemed like one of the X-Men's most complicated chapters had finally been put to rest. After decades of confusing continuity, body-swapping, and competing identities, Marvel had managed to separate Betsy Braddock and Kwannon into two distinct heroes, allowing each character to carve out her own place in the mutant mythos. Betsy embraced her role as Captain Britain, while Kwannon stepped into the mantle of Psylocke, a status quo that remained largely untouched... until now. That stretch of time didn't mean that every fan grew to agree with the decision. Betsy spent decades as the version of Psylocke most readers recognized, making the change a difficult adjustment for longtime fans. At the same time, many readers praised Marvel for finally giving Kwannon the chance to exist as her own fully realized character rather than remaining tied to one of the franchise's most controversial storylines. Now, however, Marvel appears ready to revisit that debate. Betsy Braddock Is Psylocke Again in 'Maximum X-Men' Image via Marvel Comics During the Marvel Comics: Avengers: Armageddon panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel officially announced Maximum X-Men, a new ongoing series from writer Christopher Yost and artist Tony S. Daniel launching this December. Set in the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon, the series follows Storm as she assembles a new team of mutants, with a lineup including Wolverine, Colossus, Bishop, Iceman, Firestar, Justice, and, perhaps most surprisingly, Psylocke. Normally, that wouldn't raise many eyebrows. The catch is that Marvel has confirmed the Psylocke appearing on the team is Betsy Braddock, not Kwannon, marking Betsy's return to the codename. Betsy was originally introduced as Psylocke before the character became entangled in one of Marvel's most infamous continuity twists. Beginning in the late 1980s, Betsy's mind was placed into the body of the Japanese assassin Kwannon, creating the purple-haired ninja version of Psylocke that became one of the X-Men's most recognizable characters for decades. Eventually, Marvel restored both women to their own bodies, with Betsy taking on the mantle of Captain Britain while Kwannon officially became Psylocke. That shift was widely viewed as Marvel's attempt to finally untangle years of confusing continuity while allowing both characters to exist independently. While some readers always hoped Betsy would eventually reclaim the Psylocke identity, others felt Kwannon had firmly established herself under the codename. As of now, Marvel hasn't revealed what Betsy's return as Psylocke means for Kwannon. As for Maximum X-Men itself, the series will see Storm recruit an elite team to face threats no other heroes can handle, beginning with an invasion from the Negative Zone. According to Marvel, the mutants will step up to fill the void left after the Avengers fall in Avengers: Armageddon, positioning the X-Men as Earth's primary defenders when the new series launches this December.
