In a recent trailer for the Avengers' new era, Marvel is seemingly teasing perhaps the worst hero x hero romance in franchise history. Drawing heroes from across Marvel lore, Avengers has had its share of controversial romantic combos, but this match-up has the potential to reach a new low. As part of New York Comic Con, Marvel has released a new trailer for Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, and Matt Wilson's Avengers #1. The issue will launch a new volume of the comic, picking up after the Avengers: Armageddon event with a major new status quo. The ongoing Avengers: Armageddon is revamping Avengers lore, seeing public opinion turn against the team after David Colton's mission to rid the world of nukes brings the planet to the verge of World War III. With hints a major character will die, Iron Man will do something shocking, and the team will disband, Avengers Volume 10 will unite a new group made up of heroes mostly not associated with Avengers lore. Marvel Teases a Daredevil x Captain Marvel Romance One of those heroes is Matt Murdock's Daredevil, who is shown in the new trailer hanging out with Captain Marvel. With early clips in the trailer seemingly showing Carol kiss Matt on the cheek and the two looking flirtatious near the end (as well as earlier preview pages showing the two bantering and Carol calling Daredevil "handsome") fans are speculating that the new era will bring Matt Murdock and Carol Danvers together as a couple. Usually, an unprecedented hero romance would have fans buzzing, but the reaction to this possible pairing has been far more tumultuous. While opinion will be split on pretty much any development, the fuss is arguably because Daredevil and Captain Marvel are a uniquely poor match, with fans of both characters having every reason to want them kept apart. Why Captain Marvel Fans Don't Want a Daredevil Romance On social media, Captain Marvel fans have reacted poorly to the tease. @TheBlueprint610 shared a still from the NYCC trailer, writing "GET A JOB STAY AWAY FROM HER" with user @HolyGailBatman adding "i'm neutering him myself." A common refrain is that Carol Danvers should instead get together with Jessica Drew's Spider-Woman, especially following the MCU's 2023 tease - in The Marvels - that the movie version of Carol dated Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. However, it's not just that fans want Captain Marvel paired with someone else - it's that they explicitly don't want Daredevil, and there's good reason for that. Daredevil Has An Undeniable History Of Treating Romantic Partners Poorly While Matt Murdock is an admirable character in many respects, the way he treats his romantic partners isn't one of them. Daredevil has one of Marvel's most chaotic love lives, with a string of devastating relationships in his past. That includes the typical 'partner killed by a supervillain' trope that plagues most superheroes, as well as more unique moments where Matt betrayed those he professed to love. From destroying the professional life of his girlfriend Heather Glenn so she'd accept his proposal to cheating on his wife Milla Donovan while she was still hospitalized after a supervillain attack aimted at him, Matt tends to leave women worse off than when he met them. While that theme isn't accidental and taps into Matt's complex psychology and childhood trauma, it's a big reason that Captain Marvel fans don't want to see him with Carol. Why Daredevil Fans Don't Want a Captain Marvel Romance As mentioned above, while Matt Murdock's romantic life is characterized by chaos and harmful decisions, there are many things to admire about the character. One of the biggest is his bone-deep commitment to justice, with Matt Murdock typically working as a defense attorney, protecting those who fall afoul of the powerful and amoral. As a lawyer, Matt is often characterized as the underdog going up against injustice, risking his body, mind, relationships and career in the process. Daredevil is so principled that when he accidentally killed a criminal in 2019, he pled guilty to manslaughter and voluntarily went to prison, despite learning that all his fellow street heroes had experienced (and gotten away with) similar accidents. Captain Marvel Is Daredevil's Thematic Opposite While there's a great deal of misogyny surrounding Captain Marvel (especially in the MCU), there are also valid criticisms of her characterization and history. Throughout her modern comic appearances, Captain Marvel has been characterized by a surprising willingness to kill. Captain Marvel has spent years representing the institutional violence that Daredevil is so often aligned against. From executing the Master of the World in Avengers' 'Kang Dynasty' epic to fantasizing about killing Namor's alt-universe son Ove and relishing the suffocation of a Super-Skrull during the Secret Invasion event, Carol is someone who instinctively (and sometimes gleefully) uses her godlike powers to kill. Civil War and Civil War II also characterized her as an authoritarian - hunting down fellow heroes in the former and arresting American citizens for future crimes in the latter, not to mention beating Tony Stark to death when he tried to stop her. Secret Empire doubled down on her authoritarian streak, with Carol pushing for a planetary defense shield to protect Earth from future alien invasions, only for the shield to be used by Hydra as part of a global takeover. While Captain Marvel's 'judge, jury and executioner' attitude is a character flaw that has been interesting with the right creative team, it also makes her totally incompatible with Daredevil on a thematic level. Carol has spent years representing the institutional violence that Daredevil is so often aligned against. Avengers' Creative Team Give Fans Reason To Be Optimistic While Daredevil and Captain Marvel are a poor match thematically, there's reason for fans to be optimistic about their potential pairing. Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto are fresh off a celebrated Daredevil run that embraced Matt Murdock's complexity and complicated some of his most sincerely held beliefs. At the same time, Marvel has announced a new Captain Marvel series coming from trusted creators G. Willow Wilson and Rachael Stott, making it clear that Carol remains a priority for Marvel. While Daredevil and Captain Marvel may not make sense on paper, these creative teams have given fans ample reason to trust their instincts. And while a romantic pairing between Matt and Carol might end up being a disaster, that could be entertaining if it's the intent, even exploring each character in new ways. If Daredevil and Captain Marvel Get Together, It Won't Be a Random Pairing With Zdarsky assembling what appears to be his choice of Avengers and Wilson launching a new era for Carol, there's no reason to believe these two characters are being randomly thrown together out of proximity or convenience. If there's a romance on the horizon, it's one that skilled creators experienced with these characters seem to believe in, even if that just means it'll be an interesting disaster. In Daredevil and Captain Marvel, Avengers has two heroes who are ideological opposites - let us know below whether you think a romantic pairing between the two could be interesting, or if Marvel is on the verge of a serious mistake. Avengers #1 is coming November 4 from Marvel Comics.
