The Marvel Universe is about to look very different, as several of its tentpole characters find themselves at odds once again. Anyone who knows how much havoc Marvel's Civil Wars have wrought can say this isn't a good sign for the future. Because "Iron Man vs. the Fantastic Four" is about to be a paradigm-shifting moment for everyone involved. Especially Tony Stark. Marvel fans have known he's headed toward a fall from grace for a while now. It is a contentious time for Marvel's superhero community, leading to big shake-ups, including an entirely new Avengers roster, and Iron Man is going to be on the outs with his longtime friends and superhero associates, which puts them all in a perilous position. Plus, the fact that it is going tobe Marvel's First Family who knock him down a peg is significant. It suggests that as the balance of power shifts in Marvel's hero hierarchy, the Four, particularly Reed and Sue Richards, are determined to keep the peace. Even if it costs them a close friend and perennial ally. Warning! Spoilers ahead for "Iron Man vs. Fantastic Four"! Marvel Promises "Iron Man Vs. The Fantastic Four" As Tony Stark's Future Hangs In The Balance Marvel has already revealed the upcoming "Incarcerated Iron Man" story. More on that shortly. The big question has been how Tony Stark is going to end up behind bars. Iron Man #11 is going to tell that story. Notably, Marvel has released an updated version of the cover for the issue with the words "vs. the Fantastic Four" under the Iron Man title, after initially releasing a version the omitted this subtitle. Still, the cover art very much gives that vibe. The cover shows Reed and Sue Richards looming over Iron Man, who they have trapped in an orb. They are depicted as sinister, shadowy figures. Suggesting that they will be framed as antagonists in Iron Man #11, at least from Tony's perspective. The preview pages for the issue released by Marvel for their major head-to-head confrontation finds the characters out of costume, trying to socialize, but already the tension between Reed and Tony is starting to simmer over. Iron Man And The Fantastic Four Have Years Worth Of Tension To Work Out Here's the full synopsis for Iron Man #11: FANTASTIC VS. INVINCIBLE! TONY STARK is being monitored by the people closest to him... and that includes Marvel's First Family: THE FANTASTIC FOUR! Reed and Sue Richards have kept their distance, but it's finally time for them to face down the Armored Avenger! What has IRON MAN been up to? And how will it lead him into becoming the INCARCERATED IRON MAN?! That doesn't give much more away, aside from the bit about Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman "[keeping] their distance." That stands out, because Tony Stark has been through the ringer the last few years. To paraphrase "Tubthumbing," he's been knocked down, he's gotten back up again, and this cycle has repeated several times. He became closely associated with the X-Men for some time, and continued being a team player for the Avengers up until recently, but his interactions with the Fantastic Four have been limited. Now they are all going to clear the air, and clearly things aren't going to go well. In the Iron Man #11 preview, Tony shows up to dinner with Reed and Sue with a date in tow, springing it on them in a way that seems tactical. Like he was doing it to try to avoid the hard talk the heroes have to have. Reed Richards doesn't fall for it in the preview's final frames. Readers will have to pick up the full issue to know exactly how the longtime Marvel icons' relationship fractures, but it is already clear Iron Man and The Fantastic Four are headed for a rift that might never full heal.
