The following contains major SPOILERS for The Amazing Spider-Man #1000–1005, as per solicitations. To virtually nobody’s surprise, Cormac Crane, Aunt May and Uncle Ben’s biological son, was revealed to be the brand-new Spider-Man villain Ravage in Marvel’s Amazing Spider-Man #1000. Still, it has made for a compelling milestone issue, wherein it’s possible that the Parker family history could be rewritten and retconned by Cormac’s “history-shattering power” thereafter. Surprisingly, perhaps, Ravage will be around for much longer, and not crammed into one self-contained issue for the sake of said milestone. Spider-Man and Ravage will apparently fight throughout issues #1001–1002, as well. Of course, Peter Parker will soon become an Avenger alongside Captain Marvel, Daredevil, Luke Cage, Miracleman, and Wolverine. Otherwise, it’s undetermined if his life will go on without much of a status quo change at all, or if Cormac will have successfully manipulated the memories of Peter or those near and dear to him. What’s more startling is the revelation that issue #1002 may not be the last readers see of Ravage. Is Ravage A New Spider-Man Rogues’ Gallery Villain? The solicitation for The Amazing Spider-Man #1005 states that there is “still the problem of Ravage,” confirming that Cormac will not be a flash-in-the-pan villain who vanishes, never to be seen again, after the events of issues #1000–1002. It also suggests that Peter and Cormac’s fight won’t end satisfyingly in issue #1002, with Itsy Bitsy being the main attraction instead, and Cormac merely being moved to a burner at the back of the stove: ITSY BITSY SPIDERS! J. Jonah Jameson’s tangled in ITSY BITSY’s web, and only SPIDER-MAN (with an assist from WOLVERINE) can save him! Spidey’s leveled up since the last time they fought, but whatever Spidey does, Itsy can do better! As if Spidey didn’t have his hands full, Damage Control is up to something. And there’s still the problem of Ravage... Ravage as a recurring rogues’ gallery Spider-Man villain who could come and go in the rotation of possible enemies would be interesting because of how sympathetic and targeted his grudge against Peter is—many characters have turned to villainy for far less than believing that someone is living the life they ought to be and enjoying the parental love that could’ve been theirs. That said, for all intents and purposes, Ravage would be the perfect villain to have around for a single milestone arc due to the specificity with which he intimately knows Peter and the power he has to unravel canon lore. Ravage Is Too Nuanced And Powerful Bumps and cracks in the asphalt along the way aside, Joe Kelly’s Amazing Spider-Man run has been fairly exceptional: Brian Nehring was a neat new supporting cast character who recently became a unique antagonist dubbed Spore, for example, and Hellgate is a fascinating villain who also happened to be the only reason Peter could meet Raelith and the other space-faring companions that’ve hung out with him on Earth since the Prince of Steelsilk and Hellgate’s rematch. The charm of a villain on a rogues’ gallery roster is that they’re generally more generic in their approach, with routine defeats gradually establishing the foundation for their hatred toward Spider-Man. Likewise, not every encounter they have with Spider-Man will be momentous and of epic proportions, no matter how iconic or storied they are. Ravage, on the other hand, has an ability that can literally produce narrative retcons and thus demands incredibly high stakes, which will be gimmicky and uninteresting if he’s around often without having much of an effect. The way Cormac explains his power makes it seem as if it’s a form of coercion. Superpowered individuals like Peter are likely to be naturally resistant to Cormac’s probing excavation. And, if Aunt May’s stroke was a result of Cormac scraping away at her memories, there’s no telling how much damage he could inflict, depending on how much he wanted to exhume. Unless Ravage brainstorms another villainous plight or loses his powers, it’ll be exhausting to have May and Peter forever at risk of having their memories wiped (assuming they can be recovered in the first place). Indeed, Peter received the childhood and upbringing that Cormac didn’t, and Peter is also technically to blame for Cormac’s father’s death. What does Marvel do with a character like Ravage if he’s around for the long haul? Only time will tell. The Amazing Spider-Man #1005 is scheduled to be released on December 9, 2026.
