Though this time, the reality-warper won't be facing off against other mutants. Instead, he'll be facing a very different Marvel protagonist, one who has no idea what is in store for him. With the X-Men on a collision course with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is a lot of buzz right now about mutant power levels. The question of who the most powerful mutant in Marvel lore is has taken on newfound importance. Yet if it came up in a trivia contest right now, even the most hardcore X-fans would be hard-pressed to correctly name the character Marvel declared its greatest mutant. Now, Marvel is serving up a reminder by having Sigurd Jarlson, the "man with a hammer" on a quest to resurrect Thor, come face-to-face with "the jolliest old elf of all," Marvel's #1 Omega mutant: Santa Claus. Santa Claus Returns As A Powerful Figure In Marvel Lore This Winter Thor #804, By Al Ewing & Pasqual Ferry Here is the full synopsis for Marvel's upcoming Thor #804: As the Quest for Thor continues, Sigurd Jarlson enters a realm of snow and ice on a hunt for a murderous elf. But something sees him when he’s sleeping, and knows when he’s awake…and the Mortal Thor is due a visit from the jolliest old elf of all. Somewhere in Jotunheim, a man with a hammer is learning the reason for the season… It is exactly the kind of wild detour author Al Ewing's magical and inventive ongoing Thor saga likes to take. Presumably, Santa will teach Sigurd a valuable lesson, which will take him on the next steps of his journey toward bringing back Marvel's God of Thunder. Yet the funny thing is, Santa's appearance in this new Thor tale is far from lacking precedent in Marvel lore. In fact, Santa Claus has a Marvel Comics history going back 35 years. Not only did he have an unforgettable encounter with the X-Men, and their mischievous counterparts, the Brotherhood of Mutants, but in that tale he was legitimately labeled "the world's most powerful mutant," after an off-the-charts Cerebro reading led both mutant groups directly to him. Yes, it's a record-scratch moment for even many canon-literate Marvel Comics readers. Wait, what? Santa? Not Jean Grey? Not Magneto? Not even Iceman? Santa is the strongest Omega-level mutant in Marvel history? Well, at the very least, he's one of the few characters ever to be explicitly labeled as such, which in canon means effectively the same thing. Santa Has Been An Official Omega-Level Mutant For 35 Years Now 1991 Marvel Holiday Special, Story By Scott Lobdell & Dave Cockrum Santa's mutant status was cited in 1991's Marvel Holiday Special, and it has been a topic of debate in X-Men fandom ever since. Should the Special be considered canon? The question still divides readers to this day. Some readers begrudgingly accept the issue's canon-status, but still have their own "head canon" that Cerebro was wrong, and Santa doesn't count as a Marvel mutant. Now, Thor #804 is going to bring that long-simmering discourse back to boiling. There's a strong chance the issue will call back to the '91 Holiday Special and its Omega-level designation for Santa, and even if it doesn't, the mythical figure's role in Sigurd Jarlson's ongoing story arc will solidify him as a presence in modern Marvel lore. One with exorbitant powers, whether they constitute a genetic mutation or stem from some other source. The '91 Marvel Holiday Special wasn't the only appearance of Santa Claus in Marvel Comics over the past 35 years. He has popped up occasionally, obviously usually around the holidays, and he always makes an impact. Not every reader loves the crossover between Marvel and Christmas lore, but nevertheless, they can't escape the fact that Santa exists in the Marvel Universe, and he's exceptionally powerful. So, maybe he's a Omega-level mutant with an asterisk next to his name, but Santa will remain in the conversation when Marvel's most overpowered mutants are the topic. After his upcoming role in Thor, the next step will be for Santa Claus to make an updated X-Men appearance to firmly claim his status as a mutant. And maybe he will finally, officially join the team.
