Debuting in 2003's X-Men: Evolution, Laura was later introduced to Marvel Comics lore in 2004's NYX #3. Initially believed to be a clone of Wolverine, Laura was later revealed to be his biological daughter, genetically engineered as the perfect assassin with a 'trigger scent' that forcibly plunges her into a killing frenzy. Over the last two decades, Laura Kinney has reclaimed her agency and identity, rejecting her experimental codename and becoming the second Wolverine (while also using the 'Talon' codename for a few years.) Now, she's undergoing the most drastic transformation since her debut... Wolverine's Daughter Is Weapon X-Tremis Marvel is celebrating the anniversary of its manga-inspired Mangaverse line with a return to this unique imprint, beginning with tomorrow's Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Blood #1. The comic - from Joe Kelly, Jack Kelly and Kenny Ruiz - follows a new version of Laura Kinney, introduced as "Weapon X-Tremis." Fans recently got to see Laura in action under her new codename in a preview of Web of Blood, showing her battling a magically empowered version of Nick Fury. Covered in a circuit board pattern and eldritch eyes, Laura has undergone a dramatic transformation. Introduced in 2005, 'Extremis' is a designer virus created by Tony Stark, and a major recurring piece of Iron Man lore. Extremis can be used to reprogram the human body on the genetic level, granting an essentially endless array of body transformations and superpowers. Marvel's Mangaverse is presenting its own take on Extremis, turning Laura Kinney into the ultimate wielder of 'technomancy...' Laura Kinney's New Powers Explained As the preview shows, Laura's X-Tremis infection grants her the use of 'technomancy' - a unique combination of magic and technology. Technomancy allows her to shift her body, popping serrated claws or warping her arm into a powerful cannon. She also appears to be able to spit magic sigils, forming powerful symbols with what appears to be nanotech in her saliva. It seems that Extremis' ability to reshape the human body will be retained in this new version, literally turning Laura into a living weapon, while referencing both her old codename as X-23 and her father's 'Weapon X' designation. The comic also shares some of Laura's backstory, revealing that she was tutored at a mystical school known as 'The Crossroads of the Vishanti' and is believed to have betrayed her mentor Wong. Given her human appearance in the flashback, it seems that she contracted some version of Extremis during her training. Marvel's Mangaverse Is Reborn Laura Kinney's new powers and identity are part of a significant shift in the Mangaverse. Previously defined by advanced technology, Marvel has revealed that the Mangaverse has changed in the decades fans have spent away, with magic asserting itself as the dominant force in this reality. This makes Laura's technomancy even more important, since it turns her into a living bridge between past and present - someone who can operate in a mystical world, but doesn't have a naturally magical perspective. That characterization is echoed during the flashback to her first meeting with Magik, who will also star in Web of Blood (and the upcoming Marvel Mangaverse: Web of Destiny #1) alongside Laura and Miles Morales' Spinja. As the Mangaverse returns, Wolverine's daughter is reborn as a living nexus between technology and magic, manipulating her own biology to battle Nick Fury's 'Ultimate Avengers' and soon to try and save a world heading for an occult Armageddon.
