The homemaking mogul spoke about the operation during an intimate event on September 9 at Perry St restaurant in New York City, hosted by her skincare brand, Elm Biosciences.'I had a hip replacement recently,' Stewart said during the event, per The Daily Beast.She also shared that she had been working with a physical therapist since undergoing the surgery but did not share more about when she got it.A hip replacement replaces your hip joint with an artificial implant, and is often regarded as quite a grueling operation.It's often done if someone is experiencing intense pain or is unable to move around well. 'That I cannot deal with right now. But someday maybe I'll have a cow again.'In 2007, Stewart underwent her first hip replacement surgery after dealing with pain for two years.'It is a really frightening thing to hear that you need a major operation but, as many of you know, that is just what I was told after dealing with an aching hip that just would not get better for two whole years,' Stewart wrote in a blog post at the time.'I first became aware of a problem when I could no longer do certain yoga postures comfortably,' she continued. At the time, she said that the doctor had discovered that the thin layer of her 'cushioning cartilage between my left femur and hip socket had worn away,' which was what was causing her pain in the first place.She said that when she woke up from the surgery, she felt so much better and was no longer in pain.'Today, with my new hip and no more pain, I am so very happy,' Stewart wrote at the time.
