Warning: Mild SPOILERS lie ahead for Marshals season 2, episode 1, "All Hat No Cattle"!The latest chapter in the Yellowstone franchise is about to be its biggest yet with Marshals season 2. CBS' spinoff of the hit neo-Western series picked up with Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton on the back foot when his son, Brecken Merrill's Tate, is kidnapped by greedy property owner Tom Weaver in his efforts to acquire ownership of East Camp. Having successfully saved Tate, Marshals season 2 will now turn its focus to Kayce's continued efforts to provide a more peaceful upbringing for his son, all while protecting Montana with his job as a U.S. Marshal, working under his former US Navy SEAL team leader, Logan Marshall-Green's Cal. In anticipation of the show's return, ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Logan Marshall-Green to discuss Marshals season 2. When asked about the production schedule for the remainder of the Yellowstone spinoff's new season, the star confirmed that they will be shooting "until early December." This is thanks to the fact the show got an extended episode count, with Marshall-Green also confirming that "we got 20 episodes" for season 2, seven more than its debut. Marshals enjoying a big boost in episode count certainly doesn't come as a surprise for a variety of reasons. For starters, season 1 of the Yellowstone spinoff proved a major viewership hit for CBS, namely garnering the largest same-day audience for a scripted series on the network since FBI's premiere in 2018. The network is generally known for giving shows that prove to be hits bigger episode counts in subsequent seasons, as evidenced by everything from Shemar Moore's S.W.A.T. going from 13 to 22 episodes in its debut season, to Justin Hartley's Tracker similarly rising from 13 to 20. ChronoLogic Rearrange the movies into the correct US release order. Furthermore, Grimes indicated shortly after Marshals season 2's greenlight from CBS that they would be getting more episodes upon its return, though stated that a final decision had yet to be made about whether it would be 18 or 20. In going for the latter figure, it's immediately apparent that the network has a lot of faith in the show's return, all the more understandable considering fellow Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch was a hit for sister streaming platform Paramount+. One of the most notable parts of Marshals season 2's extended episode count is that the series has now already found itself with both the longest season in Yellowstone franchise history, and the second-longest show overall. The Kevin Costner-led mainline series still holds the latter record with its 53-episode run on Paramount Network, with its fifth and final season also originally being the longest season at 14 episodes split across two parts. Given Marshals has the procedural engine at its core, it will be interesting to see how much showrunner Spencer Hudnut and his creative team utilize this extended runtime to flesh out the world of Yellowstone. The returning cast of characters do have a variety of personal arcs still to overcome, namely Cal's Pancoast tumor diagnosis and treatment, while also getting to interact with a returning fan-favorite in Jefferson White's Jimmy. Plus, with early theories pointing to Kayce and Ash Santos' Andrea exploring something deeper, even as Kelsey Asbille's Monica remains in the back of Kayce's mind, there are plenty of stories to grow alongside the case-of-the-week formula.
