Marlins Release Leo Jimenez

The Marlins have moved on from veteran infielder Leo Jimenez. He’s been released, per his MLB.com transactions log. Jimenez was designated for assignment on Thursday. Miami acquired Jimenez from the Blue Jays shortly after Opening Day. The club sent infielder Dub Gleed and international bonus pool money back to Toronto. Jimenez had been DFAed by the Blue Jays heading into the regular season. Jimenez’s tenure with the Marlins was a forgettable one. He slashed .199/.306/.259 across 66 games. The infielder did offer some versatility, spending time at all four spots on the dirt. The majority of his starts in Miami came at third base. The 25-year-old Jimenez has played in parts of three MLB seasons. He was a league-average bat as a part-timer in 2024 with Toronto, but struggled in a brief stint last year. Jimenez’s challenges at the plate continued this season, though he did take a step forward in terms of plate discipline. He trimmed his strikeout rate under 20% and boosted his walk rate to 9.3%. Jimenez posted strong plate discipline numbers in the minors, but hadn’t replicated them in the majors until this year. Miami didn’t have to cut Jimenez. He hadn’t been outrighted in his career and he’s well short of three years of big-league service time. The Marlins could’ve outrighted Jimenez to the minors without him being able to elect free agency. He’s set to hit minor league free agency at the end of the season, so cutting Jimenez gives him a head start on finding another organization.
