Mark-Paul Gosselaar is finally sharing his thoughts on Peacock’s move to cancel the Saved by the Bell reboot. The actor reprised the role of Zack Morris, which he played in the Saturday morning series from 1989 to 1993. However, after two seasons of the revival, the streamer didn’t move forward with a third season, which left Gosselaar feeling some type of way. “I was upset with NBC for canceling that,” Gosselaar told Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “I thought it was premature, especially on Peacock.” Gosselaar had previously reprised his Zack Morris role for Saved by the Bell: The College Years in 1993, the primetime sitcom that NBC canceled after one season. Watch on Deadline Tracey Wigfield of 30 Rock developed the Saved by the Bell reboot, which debuted in 2020 on Peacock. Gosselaar noted that the revival mattered: “I think we really helped expose that network” and “bring people to it.” The Saved by the Bell reboot starred Elizabeth Berkley Lauren (Jessie Spano), Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater), John Michael Higgins (Principal Toddman), Haskiri Velazquez (Daisy), Mitchell Hoog (Mac Morris), Josie Totah (Lexi), Alycia Pascual-Peña (Aisha), Belmont Cameli (Jamie Spano) and Dexter Darden (DeVante). Tiffani Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski) and Lark Voorhies (Lisa Turtle) also made guest appearances. Gosselaar was credited as a producer on the Saved by the Bell revival series and recurred throughout its two-season run. After the show’s cancellation, the actor guest-starred in HBO’s Barry. In 2023, Gosselaar landed a starring role in NBC’s Found as Hugh “Sir” Evans, but the show was canceled after two seasons. Gosselaar also has a recurring role in ABC’s Will Trent, where he plays Paul Campano.
