Naturally, the transaction won’t move the needle the way a James homecoming in Cleveland would have, but it’s about all the franchise could muster after LBJ signed with the Philadelphia 76ers over the Cavaliers, Miami Heat and other teams aiming to bring the superstar aboard for a career swan song.To quote Cleveland native Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch of the West: “What a world, what a world.”Cavaliers fans undoubtedly felt like a house had fallen on them Friday when news broke of James taking his talents to Philly on a two-year, $8 million deal.“The King” had returned to Northeast Ohio once before, of course, guiding Cleveland to the franchise’s lone championship in 2016 after a glitzy stopover in Miami. Conjecture swirled that the Cavs might be a fit again after James declined the player option on his final season with the Los Angeles Lakers.Cleveland regrouped from a 2025 postseason flameout with a trip to the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals, where it was no match for the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks.Adding James to the core of Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and James Harden surely would have bolstered the Cavs’ chances to reload. But now they’re merely in the middle of the pack of East playoff contenders.The Knicks are defending champs. The Sixers added Jaylen Brown and James to a promising core. Giannis Antetokounmpo joined the Miami Heat in a big trade, and the Toronto Raptors, who nearly picked off the Cavs in the first round of the playoffs, are hoping their deal for Kawhi Leonard goes through amid a league investigation.Recent reports named Cleveland as a possible landing spot for veteran free agent shooting guard DeMar DeRozan. The Cavs also are believed to be interested in working out a sign-and-trade with the Atlanta Hawks to land Jonathan Kuminga.Even if one or both moves pans out, that hardly vaults Cleveland beyond its current standing.Until the front office strikes again, Cavs fans are left to hope Hezonja rediscovers some of the sorcery that made him a Magic lottery pick in 2015.
