Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd return is a dangerous threat to Carrick’s rebuild – he is a problem waiting to explode

THERE is a lot of excitement around Marcus Rashford being back in a Manchester United shirt. But I reckon it is a dangerous thing to be adding back into the club’s cultural reset. But now, back comes the problem everyone wanted to get rid of 18 months ago. Sign up for the Man United newsletter Thank you! Dream Team is back, free, and there’s £100,000 up for grabs! The line we’re being sold is that, actually, that was all down to Ruben Amorim. But since that almighty falling out with Amorim, Rashford has been to Aston Villa who did not take him beyond their loan before the same thing happened at Barcelona. And now the what-to-do-about-Marcus issue lands with Carrick. Because, in reality, the problem is Rashford. He is the problem in terms of attitude and application and inconsistency. That’s where I see a real sticking point because this notion that Rashford will be happy sitting on the bench behind Matheus Cunha or whoever, or happy to play League Cup games, to me is CRAZY. United are trying to reshape the club, not spending huge fees on individuals. You’ve got all these guys who are buzzing to be there, and then you’re going have this entitled kid who thinks ‘Yeah, I’ve been here, I’ve done it, you owe me a favour.’ And he’s also on more than double their salary, you would imagine. That never works well. Rashford showed some great form at the end of last season as he won LaLiga with Barca. But do you know why that is? Because he had the World Cup there. Look through his career. When we had the Euros, he had a good time. When we had the last World Cup, before that he had a good time. It’s the spaces between — which is what they’re going into now. So where’s the motivation? It would actually be better for United if he had only one year left on his contract, instead of two. Then he would have the mentality to grind through and get a massive deal at the end of it or the move he wants. No, it feels like a problem waiting to explode.
