And he’s looking all the more likely to stay at Man Utd beyond Tuesday’s transfer deadline. Sign up for the Man United newsletter Thank you! The forward has forced his way back into the picture at Old Trafford after spending last season on loan at Barcelona. He has impressed United boss Michael Carrick in training, coming on at half-time in last weekend’s defeat to Hull City. The 28-year-old’s move to the No9 shirt raised a few eyebrows last week. Many assumed Benjamin Sesko would take the number following Rasmus Hojlund’s exit, but Sesko was set on keeping his current No30. Reports indicate the number has deeper meaning for him, having worn it throughout his spells at Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig before moving to Man Utd. Rashford had looked destined to leave United after falling out of favour in recent seasons and spending spells away from the club. But the Spanish giants decided against activating that clause, instead signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle and Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund. They are still searching for a striker after Robert Lewandowski left for Chicago Fire on a free transfer. Atletico Madrid have also refused to entertain Barcelona’s interest in Julian Alvarez. That could yet leave the door open for a late Rashford reunion, but Barca have so far given no indication they plan to reopen talks. Meanwhile, United could still be busy before the window slams shut at 11pm on Tuesday. Fiorentina have opened talks over taking Joshua Zirkzee back to Serie A on a season-long loan. The Italian side are prepared to pay around £4.3m for the Dutchman but United want any agreement to include an obligation to buy worth about £21.5m. Moving him on could give United financial room to strengthen at left-back, with Barcelona ace Alejandro Balde on their shortlist. Barca value the Spain international at £30m but United are currently only interested in a loan deal. Luke Shaw is Carrick’s only senior specialist left-back, while 19-year-old Harry Amass could be allowed out if another defender arrives. Comment now
