Marcus Freeman: ‘There was no other option’ than returning to Notre Dame amid NFL interest

Throughout the offseason, after Notre Dame chose not to play in a bowl game after its College Football Playoff snub, Marcus Freeman’s name was at the center of NFL coaching rumors. He addressed the interest multiple times since and, Friday, said there was “no other option” than to stay in South Bend. As vacancies came up in the NFL, multiple reports connected Freeman to some openings. The New York Giants were a notable team to come up in the rumor mill while there was speculation he could be in the mix for the Pittsburgh Steelers job after Mike Tomlin stepped down. Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday, he cited the balance between prioritizing himself and his family, which factored into his decision to run it back with the Fighting Irish. “I mean, for me, you have to make a decision that’s best for you and your family,” Freeman said. “For us, there was no other option. For me, selfishly, it’s the opportunity to be around some of the greatest young people in the world. Yeah, they’re great football players. But they’re great people. To see them succeed and excel is something that I aspire to continue to do. I’m grateful for it. “I always say, when you’re not grateful for something, you’re going to lose it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be around these guys and in this program right now and for years to come.” When it comes to NFL teams’ interest in Freeman, it starts with his ability to build relationships with his players and the culture at Notre Dame. He has a 43-12 overall record as Fighting Irish head coach after taking over for Brian Kelly in 2022 and led the program to a national championship game appearance in 2024. Notre Dame went 10-2 last season, ending the year on a 10-game winning streak after losses to Miami and Texas A&M to start things off. However, the Fighting Irish missed out on the College Football Playoff as the first team out of the field and ultimately chose not to play in a bowl game.
