LIAM VAN NISTELROOY is following in his famous father’s footsteps after scoring a stunning winner to send PSV Under-19s into the Otten Innovation Cup final. The 18-year-old produced a finish straight out of the Ruud van Nistelrooy playbook as PSV beat Chelsea Under-19s 3-1 in the semi-final. But it was in Eindhoven where Ruud first made his name, smashing 77 goals in just 90 games for PSV before earning his move to England. He went on to win the Premier League title with United in 2002/03 and claimed the Golden Boot after scoring 25 league goals. The Dutch striking sensation finished that campaign with 44 goals in all competitions – the second-highest single-season tally in United history, behind only Denis Law‘s 46 in 1963/64. Now his son appears to have inherited the same deadly instinct in front of goal. Van Nistelrooy served as Erik ten Hag‘s assistant at United at the start of the 2024/25 season before taking temporary charge for four games in October and November 2024. He then made way for Ruben Amorim after the Portuguese’s appointment as United boss. A turbulent spell at Leicester City followed as the Foxes went down from the Premier League in 2024/25. Ruud then went on to work with Holland, serving as Ronald Koeman‘s assistant at the World Cup, where the Dutch were knocked out in the Round of 32 after losing to Morocco on penalties. Now it is Liam who is beginning to make his own name in football. Chelsea bounced back from the semi-final defeat by beating Monaco Under-19s 1-0 to claim third place, with Leo Cardoso scoring the winner. But all eyes will now be on PSV and Liam as they chase Otten Cup glory against Palmeiras.
