MANCHESTER United have launched a major US court blitz against websites accused of flogging fake club shirts and merchandise. The most recent accuses a group of unidentified businesses and traders of trademark infringement. In one case launched in February, United targeted 24 online sellers with names including yami_jerseys, jersey.factory44 and soccer.shirt.foot. The club secured an asset freeze before later winning default judgments against almost all of them. Another action in June initially targeted 57 alleged counterfeit sellers. City of London Police revealed in July that more than 220,000 fake football shirts worth an estimated £18.5million had been taken off the market since January. United say fake shirts do not undergo the same quality checks as official merchandise.
