MANCHESTER UNITED have named ex-Hearts boss Eva Olid as their women’s manager a month before the start of the Women’s Super League season. The Spaniard, 40, linked up with her new squad on Wednesday after Marc Skinner left the role by mutual consent on Monday. Mirroring Sir Alex Ferguson’s pre-United rise with Aberdeen, Olid broke the Old Firm’s dominance by leading Hearts to their first SWPL title on a dramatic final day last season. She has 30 days until the start of the WSL season against London City Lionesses on September 4. Olid had already confirmed in April that she would leave the Edinburgh club this summer by mutual agreement, before Hearts finished two points clear of Rangers. She joined Hearts in 2021 and signed an extension until the summer of 2026 with the option of a further year. Olid also guided Hearts to their first domestic final, but lost to Rangers in the 2024 Scottish Cup. Olid took over at Hearts when they were bottom of the SWSL before finishing fourth in back-to-back seasons and dropping to fifth in 2024-25. Skinner left United after leading them to their first major trophy in the Women’s FA Cup final in 2024, before losing three straight finals. The former Birmingham City head coach raised concerns over a lack of investment in the squad while United struggled to compete in the Champions League for the first time last season. Skinner’s side missed out on qualification this season, while star striker Melvine Malard was sold to Chelsea for a club record £850,000 and defender Gabby George is set to join Brighton. Skinner, 43, signed a new two-year contract last summer, before leading United to fourth in the Women’s Super League. The club are understood to feel the current level of spending across the WSL is unsustainable and they want a different approach, focusing on their own younger talents and improving their academy.
