On Rotten Tomatoes, Superman boasts a near-perfect 90% audience score. As such, it is clear that audiences love Corenswet's version of Superman, not just the character in general, and his return in a sequel merely two years later finally breaks a negative DC streak. Man Of Tomorrow Is The First True Superman Sequel Since Superman IV Before Corenswet, DC's live-action movie version of Superman was Henry Cavill's. The actor debuted in 2013's Man of Steel, directed by Zack Snyder, and then went on to appear in multiple movies in the DCEU franchise. However, we never got a true Man of Steel sequel with Cavill. Sure, the actor co-starred in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside Ben Affleck as Batman. However, that was not really a full-on Superman sequel, and, frankly, it felt more like a Batman film in the end. Cavill tried for years to make Man of Steel 2 happen, but it never worked out. As such, when Man of Tomorrow comes out in 2027, it will have been 40 years since a true Superman movie sequel was released in theaters. That project was Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, the final DC movie to feature Christopher Reeve as Superman, which flew into theaters on July 24, 1987. Superman IV: The Quest for Peace standing all this time as the last Superman movie sequel is disappointing for multiple reasons. Not only will it have taken four decades for one of the biggest superheroes ever to get a true sequel, but Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is not a good movie to continue to occupy that spot in the Superman franchise's history for all this time. While Man of Tomorrow will feature many DC heroes, like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it will be directly continuing from the ties built between most of them from the events of Superman, with Corenswet's Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor at its center. Why Hasn't Superman Had Many Sequels? The reason why this long streak without a Superman sequel exists is due to how multiple ideas for how to continue the franchise after Reeve's time in the role came to an end failed. Before Brandon Routh would be cast in 2006's Superman Returns, ideas that included unmade projects like Superman V, Superman Reborn, Tim Burton's Superman Lives with Nicolas Cage as Kal-El, J.J. Abrams' Superman: Flyby, and more never made it to the big screen. When Superman Returns was not the massive success that the studio hoped it would be, a sequel was canned. Then, 2013's Man of Steel led to Cavill appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one of the most divisive DC movies to date, as Warner Bros. tried to quickly build a shared universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
