City’s top scorer Teddy Lamb brought a stunning save out of Red Devils keeper Cameron Bryne-Hughes early on. City had the better chances after the break with Lamb steering a shot over from Heskey’s cross. Winger Ryan McAidoo – who scored for the first team in the FA Cup in January – saw a deflected effort hit the underside of the bar. Heskey cut in from the left, went past his defender then thumped a shot into the roof of the net – giving Byrne-Hughes no chance. Just as extra-time looked inevitable, Heskey drifted in from the left, went past his man and unleashed a ferocious shot past Bryne-Hughes.
