See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 06:50 EDT, 29 July 2026 | Updated: 06:56 EDT, 29 July 2026 A man who allegedly killed a grammar school headteacher by knocking him off his bike while he cycled home from work is to face trial for murder.Simon Richardson, 35, appeared via video link at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court today for a preliminary hearing.He is charged with the murder of Michael Mullins, 56, who was the head teacher at Stretford Grammar School for 17 years.Mr Mullins died when he was hit by a vehicle in Paddock Lane, Altrincham, Greater Manchester, in April this year. He did not enter any pleas at the brief hearing.Prosecution and defence asked for a further adjournment until September 10 to assess the evidence before a trial, which is due to take place on October 12.Judge Maurice Greene granted the adjournment .Members of Mr Mullins’s family, who have paid an emotional tribute to the head teacher, were in court for the five minute hearing.His devastated relatives said: 'He was devoted to his family, and our lives will never be the same. A gap has been left in our hearts and within his role as a headteacher of Stretford Grammar School.'Our Dad gave us fantastic memories growing up including a trip getting lost at night around Washington D.C but it was in his role as a Grandad where he truly excelled.'Our love and memories of Michael will know no limits.'In a further tribute, his school said: 'He will be remembered not just for his 'quietly brilliant' leadership, but for the kindness he showed to everyone he met'.The school said Mr Mullins was a man 'who excelled in his roles as a husband, father, and grandfather'.
