Man (40s) arrested over Rosslare incident with six people found in shipping container

A man in his 40s has been arrested in relation to an incident in which six people were found in a container at Rosslare Europort. Emergency services were alerted at around 6am on Thursday after one of the men inside the container made a distress call.Five men and a juvenile were located inside a container after the vessel docked at Rosslare Europort and they were taken to Wexford General Hospital. The six are believed to be Algerian. The container ship they were on, the MS Lismore, left Zeebrugge at 11pm on Tuesday night and docked in Rosslare on Thursday morning at 4am. Two have been refused permission to land, while the juvenile is receiving appropriate support, according to gardaí. The man was arrested on Friday and is currently being questioned at a garda station in Co Wexford. Independent Cllr Ger Carthy, who is a member of the National Ambulance Service, said the container in question had been sealed in Belgium before sailing to Ireland. “Rosslare port is bringing in 36 ships a week with half a million container movements a year, it is a busy spot,” he said. “Any trailer or container has a security seal on it. There was a legitimate security seal on it, but they were in it. Somebody must have put them in it. “There must have been somebody on in the inside track who put them in before it was sealed.” A response to the distress call was co-ordinated involving port staff, immigration services and the National Ambulance Service.Rosslare Europort handles hundreds of thousands of trailer movements each year. A spokesperson for Wexford gardaí said: “The investigation into the incident is continuing.”
