A MAJOR tube line spanning 53 stations is set to close for eleven days over the next month, causing chaos for Heathrow passengers. The series of closures starts today while the line undergoes essential upgrades. Beginning today, July 30, the line is set to shutter for 11 days in total while essential work and train testing is under way. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! The major upgrades are taking place to make way for a new fleet of trains, beginning service between December 2026 and 2027. The 94 new trains form part of a huge £3.4billion modernisation of the Piccadilly line. Current Piccadilly line trains have been in service since 1975, so the new updated vehicles are expected to bring “significant customer benefits”, including walk-through carriages, better reliability and increased frequency. According to the TfL website, these part-closures mean that “essential upgrades to the power supply, tracks, platforms, depots and sidings” can be carried out while “continuing to test the new train’s interaction with existing London Underground infrastructure” while their efficiency and performance is assessed. Travellers are advised to plan ahead and use real-time travel tools, like TfL Go and TfL Journey Planner, to track their routes. The following closures are set to take place: Most read in The Sun Cockfosters to Uxbridge will be closed on Thursday, July 30, Friday, July 31, and Monday, August 3. The Night Tube will also be closed on Friday, July 31 into Saturday, August 1. A closure from Cockfosters to Heathrow will also take place on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2. Midweek closures will also take place for two consecutive weeks in August from Cockfosters to Uxbridge on Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20 and Tuesday 25 to Thursday 27. TfL has confirmed that while the closures are in place, the Metropolitan line will continue to run as normal between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge. TfL’s chief capital officer, Stuart Harvey, said: “I’d like to thank our customers for their patience while we carry out these essential upgrades to the Piccadilly line and rigorously test the new trains which will transform journeys for many decades to come.” Further closures are set to take place later this year, from September to November.
