Major high street charity confirms 87 store closures across the UK – with a further 63 branches facing the axe

THE British Heart Foundation has confirmed the first wave of store closures, with 87 branches set to shut their doors for good across the UK. The closures span the length and breadth of the country, from Blackpool and Burnley to Brighton, Bath and Bangor. Other towns affected include Camden, Chesterfield, Durham, Eastbourne, Hammersmith, Plymouth, Sunderland and Swansea, alongside a string of dedicated Home Store branches in places such as Chatham, Hull, Salford and Wrexham. A full list of the 87 stores has been published, with closures taking place across England, Scotland and Wales in the coming months. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! It comes after the charity revealed in June that it planned to shut around 150 of its stores over the next two years, as part of a major shake-up of its retail estate. The British Heart Foundation currently operates around 640 shops across the UK, and blamed rising operational costs and changing shopping habits for the decision. Under the plans, 90 branches were expected to close by March 2027, with the remaining closures to follow by March 2028. British Heart Foundation chief executive Dr Charmaine Griffiths said: “Our shops mean so much to our colleagues, brilliant volunteers and communities across the UK.” She added: “Like most retailers, we are facing an exceptionally challenging trading environment.” Dr Griffiths said the charity was “deeply grateful” to staff and volunteers affected by the closures, and confirmed workers would be supported throughout the process. A further 63 branches are still under review and could face the axe as the second wave of closures is finalised.
