The best Avatar game in years becomes even better ahead of its Switch 2 launch Image: Gameplay Group International/PM Studios, Inc., Skydance Games Sign in to your Polygon.com account With its fantastic animation and incredible attention to detail, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game felt like it was destined for greatness. And perhaps the fighting game could have gone down as the best Avatar interactive experience ever made had it not been released in July 2026 without some key components promised in its marketing. But now, three months later, Avatar Legends looks like it might to live up to its original promise. The game just received its fourth content update, and it's the biggest overhaul of the title yet. Avatar State Aang and Nightmare Korra, the powered-up forms of the series' protagonists, were redrawn from the ground up and now have new attacks and techniques. All the other characters have been rebalanced as well, though not quite to the same degree. One of the biggest complaints players had around launch was Avatar Legends' lack of a ranked mode, which made it difficult for newbie players to find their footing against expert players. The new patch fixes that issue with the addition of a ranked mode and a competitive ladder, as well as a brand-new spectator mode. Developer Gameplay Ground International is also promising beginner-friendly lobbies, new tutorials, and combo trials that break down advanced tactics. The idea is to help new players stick around for the long term — which is important when the game is about to launch on Switch 2 on October 29. The entire game, from menus to the in-match HUD, has been retouched for a "bolder" presentation, according to a news release. Returning fans can now enjoy two formerly story-exclusive stages, Avatar Road and Air Temple, during multiplayer. When selecting a stage, players can now choose the music track that plays during a fight as well. There are other additions, like an expanded Arcade mode and additional difficulty settings — though the developer did not provide further specifics. The key takeaway here, though, is that Avatar Legends is trying to address all the major fan complaints to date. The timing isn't accidental: the title will soon launch on Switch 2 with cross-play support. Switch users who already own the game will be eligible for a free upgrade, the developers say. The update is significant enough that even scorned players are intrigued. "I was not happy about the unfinished feel of the game on release but damnnnn this looks sooooooooo good," reads one YouTube comment.
