Magic: The Gathering Isn’t Done With Final Fantasy Just Yet

Published Sep 3, 2026, 4:26 PM EDT Final Fantasy promo cards are officially a trend for Magic Image: Wizards of the Coast Magic: The Gathering’s most successful Universes Beyond crossover set ever, Final Fantasy, may have been released more than a year ago, but Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix apparently aren’t ready to put it to bed just yet. A newly announced promo card keeps the collaboration alive well into 2027. Thursday morning’s Sony State of Play included an extended gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the final chapter in Square Enix’s FF7 remake trilogy. The publisher announced that the game will be released April 8, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Square Enix also revealed preorder information, including an unexpected bonus for Magic fans: Special day-one physical editions available through participating retailers will include a foil FF7-themed Magic promo card depicting Cloud Strife clashing with Sephiroth. The card will be available while supplies last, according to Square Enix’s announcement. Image: Square Enix The card itself is a reprint of Final Showdown, a versatile white instant originally printed as a mythic rare in 2024’s Outlaws of Thunder Junction. Its spree mechanic lets players pay for any combination of three effects: stripping every creature of its abilities for the turn, granting one creature indestructible, or destroying every creature on the battlefield. That makes Final Showdown an unusually flexible board wipe. At its cheapest, it can protect a crucial creature for two mana. For six mana, it can destroy every creature at instant speed. Paying eight mana activates all three modes in sequence, removing potentially troublesome abilities before making one creature indestructible and destroying everything else. It's a fitting representation of a video game where a giant meteor looms in the sky, threatening to destroy the entire planet. Image: Wizards of the Coast The original Final Showdown depicts a lone gunslinger walking past a row of bodies on the ground, but the Final Fantasy reprint features new art by Square Enix character designer Tetsuya Nomura depicting Sephiroth and Cloud facing off. Based on the original FF7 canon, however, this cannot be the actual final showdown between the two because Sephiroth has his shirt on. Although, FF7 Remake did break fate itself, so all bets are off. This also isn’t the first time Square Enix has used a Magic card to sweeten the deal on video game preorders. Physical Nintendo Switch 2 copies of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, released in June, included a full-art foil Zack Fair promo featuring artwork by Nomura. In addition to these two promos, Wizards also released other products well after the initial June 2025 launch. In December 2025, Wizards of the Coast released four Scene Boxes recreating moments from Final Fantasy, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 15. That holiday wave also included a Chocobo Bundle loaded with themed lands and alternate-art cards. By the time FF7 Revelation comes out, it will have been almost two full years since Final Fantasy cards were first released — is it at all possible we'll get even more FF cards? When Polygon spoke with Magic principal designer Gavin Verhey at MagicCon: Las Vegas in May, he acknowledged that even the massive original set could not cover everything from the franchise’s history. “We could have made a 2,000-card set and still not covered all the things players wanted to see,” Verhey said. “The set is already huge.” Verhey explained that the team approached the project as though it might be its only opportunity to adapt Final Fantasy, prioritizing the biggest characters and moments while also making room for deeper cuts. Even so, he was enthusiastic about the possibility of returning to the franchise. “If we ever got the opportunity to do more, of course, I would leap at the opportunity,” Verhey said. “There’s a lot of other cool stuff to do there. We did not touch any of the side games. We could always tap into those.” Another Final Fantasy set is far from confirmed. But between the December product wave, the Zack Fair promo, and now Final Showdown, supplemental releases are starting to look like a pattern — and with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation still seven months away, there is plenty of time for Magic’s most successful crossover to deliver another big surprise.
