Magic: The Gathering is officially getting a well-deserved 12-part series coming in 2027. With this confirmation, we now have an exact release date, exciting plot details, and confirmation of which of Magic's iconic characters will lead the upcoming series. Known as Hasbro’s first $1 billion brand, it’s no surprise that Magic has expanded far beyond its humble beginnings as a physical collectible card game, branching out into other forms of media, from video games and novels to comics and more. Now, there are even reports of a live-action film and television universe in the works, as well as an adult animated Magic: The Gathering series for Netflix. While a live-action and animated universe in the works is more than exciting, neither project has an official release date yet. However, there is now confirmation of a separate 12-part Magic series set to release in January 2027: Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir. Magic: The Gathering's Teferi Akosa Gets 12-Part Series (Everything Known So Far) Main Cover by Paris Alleyne for Magic: The Gathering – Mage of Zhalfir #1 (2027) Dark Horse, in partnership with Hasbro, has confirmed that Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir will be a 12-part series, with the first issue releasing on January 20, 2027. As the title suggests, the series will focus on one of Magic’s longest-running major characters, Teferi Akosa. Specifically, the series will follow Teferi during his youth at the Tolarian Academy, exploring his early development as a time mage and his journey toward becoming one of the franchise’s most legendary characters. Since the series follows Teferi during his formative years at the Tolarian Academy, it's no surprise that the legendary Urza will be part of the narrative. Urza is recognized as one of the foundational figures in Magic’s entire history, with his role as Teferi’s mentor already an established part of the franchise's lore. Thus, fans can expect this new series to further explore Teferi and Urza's relationship, shedding light on a relatively unexplored period of their established history. The official synopsis for issue #1 reads: “Under the tutelage of the master Planeswalker, Urza, an ambitious young mage studies at the prestigious Tolarian Academy on Dominaria. Teferi Akosa knows he is destined for greatness, but manipulating time and space is delicate work, and tampering with reality always has its consequences…” The series will notably be brought to life by an impressive creative team, with award-winning writer Ray Fawkes (Batman: Eternal, Black Hammer ’45) and letterer AndWorld Design (He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Arrivals) leading the way. Rapha Lobosco (ThunderCats, Vampirella) will illustrate the first four issues, and Jão Canola (Knights of Doom) will color them. Magic: The Gathering: Mage of Zhalfir #1 will be 32 pages and priced at $4.99. So, fellow mages and Planeswalkers, are you ready to witness Dominaria's history through the eyes of the once-and-future Planeswalker Teferi Akosa in what promises to be the start of an epic new chapter in the Magic: The Gathering franchise?
