The Madras High Court issued notice on a plea seeking an investigation into Saurav Das. The case raises allegations over his identity documents, funding and remarks against the judiciary.Chennai,Oct 30, 2026 16:12 ISTThe Madras High Court has issued notice to the Union government and others on a petition seeking a detailed and fair investigation into the background of Yogesh Sharma alias Saurav Das, the national co-convenor of the Cockroach Janata Party, and his parents, news agency Press Trust of India reported. The petition, filed by businessman Ganesh Kumar, also seeks the cancellation of Das's passport and Aadhaar card if he is found guilty, as well as restrictions on him making allegedly derogatory statements against the judiciary.A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan ordered notice, returnable within six weeks, to the Union government, the Regional Passport Officer and 10 others. The public interest litigation filed by Kumar, a resident of Kancheepuram district, came up for hearing on Friday.Kumar alleged that Das's lineage could be traced to Nepal and said the claim must be investigated. If it was found to be true, Kumar said, Das “cannot lecture about our government and our judiciary”. He accused Das of “abusing” the judiciary. According to PTI, Kumar also sought a direction to the Ministry of Electronics and Telecommunications to block the Twitter and Instagram accounts named “Saurav Das” and prevent him from making further derogatory statements against the judiciary and Supreme Court judges. The petitioner further sought to restrain Das, his friends, colleagues, agents or representatives from making defamatory, intimidating, abusive, vulgar or disparaging statements against the judiciary through any media, including social media, until the case is decided. He alleged that Das had been constantly abusing the judiciary and said this amounted to an abuse of the Constitution. Kumar claimed that if the information about Das's alleged Nepali roots was true, Yogesh Sharma had concealed these facts and fraudulently obtained an Aadhaar card, voter identity card and passport in India. He sought an investigation into how Das obtained these documents, the sources of his funds and the people funding him. He said Das's accounts should also be examined. The petition, therefore, seeks an investigation into Das's background, identity documents and funding, along with the blocking of his social media accounts and restrictions on statements allegedly targeting the judiciary.- Ends
