Pictures showed back-to-back traffic building up between Junction 18, for Middlewich, and Junction 19, for Knutsford. Motorists had initially been stopped on both sides of the busy route. Cheshire Fire and Rescue confirmed crews were dealing with a “large vehicle fire” on the M6. A spokesperson said: “Firefighters are currently at the scene of a large vehicle fire on the M6 north, between junctions 18 and 19. “Disruption is expected while the incident is dealt with. “Please avoid this stretch of the motorway and use an alternative route where possible.” Most read in The Sun National Highways warned of lengthy delays on the route, with drivers also being affected on the southbound carriageway. Issuing a statement on X, it said: “Northbound remains closed due to a HGV fire. Southbound reopened. Cheshire Fire remain on scene. “Northbound delays: 100 mins, 6 miles of congestion. “Southbound delays: 15 mins, 2 miles of congestion.” Comment now
