THE M1 has been partially closed after a horror multi-vehicle collision which caused a lorry to flip on its side and a “substantial oil spillage”. The southbound section between Junction 12, for Toddington, and Junction 11, for Luton, has been shut. The nearside barrier and boundary fencing have suffered “significant damage” and a “substantial oil spillage” has affected most lanes, National Highways said. Traffic that was caught within the closure has now been released past the scene via lane 4. Bedfordshire Police and other emergency services remain in attendance. National Highways traffic officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management. The carriageway will remain closed while emergency services complete their response, followed by vehicle recovery, barrier repairs and carriageway clean-up. National Highways has set up a diversion and drivers are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs.
