The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated a troubling decline in childhood vaccination rates in Brazil, a trend that was already underway before the outbreak. Immunization coverage for diseases such as tuberculosis, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough, which had hovered around 99% at the start of the century, has dropped to 95%—barely meeting the adequate threshold—and further decreased since 2016. This shift is significant as it threatens to reverse years of public health progress, highlighting the need for innovative approaches, such as vaccinating children at schools, to restore and maintain these critical health metrics.
