Lufthansa Reveals Major New 14-Hour Nonstop Long-Haul Routes: See Map Now

He taught airline strategy and economics to undergraduate and postgraduate students for five years and has worked closely with multiple carriers on route and market intelligence projects. He is based near London, UK. Lufthansa is Europe's fourth-largest airline for long-haul flights, which go from hubs at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC). Between November and next July, the Star Alliance member has an average of 65 daily long-haul departures: 40 from FRA and 25 from MUC. The German giant is particularly strong to Asia and North America. It has the second-highest number of departures among European flag carriers to both continents. Turkish Airlines is first to Asia (its hub is on the European side of the Bosphorus Strait), while British Airways is number one to North America. Lufthansa Will Reintroduce Flights To Tokyo Narita Germany's flag carrier has confirmed that it is returning to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). It'll operate from FRA to NRT on March 28, 2027, which is when Northern Hemisphere airlines will switch to summer schedules. Flights will run daily using the Boeing 787-9, and will be the first time the airline has deployed a Boeing twinjet to Japan. Presumably the Allegris-equipped 287-seat configuration will be used. Frequency FRA To NRT; Local Times NRT To FRA; Local Times Daily LH710: 1:45 PM-9:30 AM+1 LH711: 11:20-6:40 PM Obviously, Lufthansa previously flew to NRT for decades, with Cirium Diio showing that the final flight took place in January 2017. The Star Alliance operator consolidated at Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), which is much closer to downtown Tokyo. Now it is returning to NRT, with three routes to the Japanese capital — the most in ten years. The development comes as other alliance members are growing at NRT. For example, United Airlines will reintroduce service from Chicago to NRT this month, while Air New Zealand follows from Christchurch in November and SWISS is adding more flights. This is part of wider long-haul development from NRT. For example, Finnair will introduce a second daily service to NRT next year, while Delta Air Lines will return from Seattle and American Airlines will return from Chicago. Lufthansa Is Also Returning To Japan's Fourth Most Populous City On March 29, the German giant will resume flights from FRA to Nagoya. The carrier last flew to the city's Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) in March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold. Many airlines cut routes and destinations in response to that major event. The map below shows airspace closed to Lufthansa and how big the detours will be. Flights will return to NGO after a seven-year gap. Lufthansa will fly three times a week from its busiest hub, using the 787-9 for the first time. Between 2004 and 2020, only the Airbus A340-300 and A340-600 were flown to NGO. While they're much more characterful than the 787, they're obviously considerably less fuel-efficient and with much older products. In summer 2019, five weekly departures were available. It might take Lufthansa a while to return to that frequency. Days FRA To NGO; Local Times Days NGO To FRA; Local Times Mondays, Wednesdays, Saturdays LH736: 2:10 PM-9:35 AM+1 Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays LH737: 11:30-6:30 PM Lufthansa will be only the second European operator flying to NGO. It'll join Finnair, which was previously in an outstanding geographic position to carry passengers from East Asia to Europe via its Helsinki hub. Nowadays, the detour to avoid Russian and Ukrainian airspace, in particular, means that it is less competitive. Loading map… Drag to explore Lufthansa Will Now Have Five Routes To Japan Let's fast-forward to the peak summer month of July 2027. Lufthansa plans 31 weekly departures from Germany to Japan, with four to five daily services. Five routes will be available: FRA to HND (daily 747-8), FRA to NGO (three weekly 787-9), FRA to NRT (daily 787-9), MUC to HND (daily A350-900), and MUC to Kansai International Airport (KIX; daily A350-900). Japan will be Lufthansa's fourth most-served long-haul nation from Germany, after the US (234 weekly departures), India (51), and Canada (42). It'll overtake China for the fourth spot (24 weekly flights). Back in July 2019, Japan was fifth, with just 15 weekly departures. Frequencies have thus more than doubled, despite all the consequences of detouring to avoid particular airspace.
