The Sun’s Investigations Editor Rob Pattinson examines the case through new testimony, expert analysis and evidence from an anonymous hospital insider. The film explores whether the focus on Letby may have obscured wider problems within the Countess of Chester Hospital neonatal unit. An anonymous senior consultant who worked at the hospital raises concerns about staffing levels, overcrowding and whether the unit was caring for babies whose needs exceeded the facilities available. The whistleblower does not allege that anyone deliberately set out to frame Letby. His assessment argues that some of the deaths could have alternative medical explanations. It comes days after the final report of the Thirlwall Inquiry was published on September 15. Lady Justice Thirlwall found “dysfunctional management and governance” at the hospital. Her report also stated there was a “complete failure” to use safeguarding procedures once concerns were raised that babies could be being deliberately harmed. Letby remains in prison serving 15 whole-life orders. In August 2023, she was convicted following a 10-month trial at Manchester Crown Court of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others between June 2015 and June 2016. A jury failed to reach verdicts on several other attempted murder charges. At a retrial that began in June 2024, Letby was convicted of attempting to murder another child, known as Baby K. Her appeals against both sets of convictions were later rejected. But in February 2026, the CCRC confirmed that a review of Letby’s convictions is under way after an application was made on her behalf. The independent body can refer a conviction back to the Court of Appeal if it concludes there is a real possibility it would not be upheld. Comment now
