Lucy Hale Embraced Her Good Witchy Style—and Found Herself—in Her Los Angeles Sanctuary

The Pretty Little Liars actor brought rich colors and bold personality to her home—it’s “witchy, but not bad witchy,” says designer Marie TrohmanI never expected to be moved to tears by actor Lucy Hale’s home redesign, yet here I am during our interview, misty over kitchen cabinets the color of ripe plums; verklempt at the swirly candy stripes of a sofa covered in a Kelly Wearstler fabric. A week later, Hale’s designers, Ashley Drost and Marie Trohman of LA-based AD PRO Directory firm Proem, were so overcome with emotion during our chat that they had to pause to collect themselves. It’s not just the “moody femme” decor—a sensibility coined by the Proem duo—but the deeper meaning behind Hale’s Los Angeles sanctuary that has a way of making grown women cry.“This house has been very healing for me,” Hale, 37, says via Zoom. She is nestled on a smoky-gray velvet sofa in the media room, her white Maltipoos, Elvis and Ethel, popping in and out of frame. “I have had heartbreak in this home. I got sober in this home. It feels very divine for me to be living here at this specific moment.”Los Angeles plaster artist Marli Arizona created a custom pomegranate surround for the front door. “Pomegranates represent prosperity and abundance,” Hale says. The door knocker, which also bears a pomegranate, is from DeVol. The exterior wall sconces are from Hudson Valley Lighting. The interior design is by Proem, the landscape design is by Wander Landscape Design, and the construction is by Craig Sampson Construction. A sheep statue greets guests in the entry. Hale chose the cowgirl artwork—Austin Hayman’s Three Apples, sourced by Jordan Horowitz of Fairground Advisory—after learning the subject’s name was Lucy. It hangs above a French wrought iron console from South Loop Loft. In the entry, Drost and Trohman added an archway with hand-painted Tabarka tile, which was also added to the stairs. An early 20th-century Danish two-seater settee in shearling fabric from 1stDibs sits atop an antique Malayer rug from Woven. A Haunt Pendant by Jane Hallworth, from Blackman Cruz, hangs overhead. The aluminum silver blinds artwork by Anne Libby was sourced by Jordan Horowitz of Fairground Advisory. Interlude Home Philippe Sheep SculptureVintage Danish 2-Seater SofaHale bought the Spanish-style, 1940s property in 2019, two years after wrapping up her starring run on the cunning teen drama Pretty Little Liars. Seeking calm after spending most of her 20s on television, she opted for a neutral, “farmhouse-y” initial renovation. But Hale didn’t quite know herself, or her style, yet. The actor got sober in 2022 and “started really taking care of my mind,” she says; coming of age in the spotlight, she got into a cycle of anxiety, depression, and alcohol. The quiet, sunlit house, tucked away in a canyon, provided a refuge.Around the same time, Hale decided her home needed to evolve with her. “I want my house to meet me at my womanhood,” she tells me. Her taste developed along with her sense of self. Craving richer colors, bolder personality, and quirks to reflect her own, Hale tapped Drost and Trohman after admiring their work on Emma Chamberlain’s eclectic Los Angeles retreat in AD. In their first meetings, “we picked up on something strong” in Hale, Trohman says—“witchy, but not bad witchy.”“I am very much a homebody,” says Hale, pictured in her living room. “You are not going to find me out and about in big crowds. Drost and Trohman added wood beams to the ceiling to reclaim the home’s Spanish-style roots. Wardrobe styling by Jenna Filingeri. The media room is outfitted with a vintage modular sofa designed by Pamio, Toso and Massari for Stilwood and upholstered in a Schumacher velvet. Dedar wallpaper covers the walls; the vintage coffee table is from 1stDibs, and the custom curtains are in a Pindler fabric. The loomed merino wool rug is from Marc Phillips, and the Lamb Chop toy is Elvis and Ethel’s own. The media room bar nods to Hale’s Memphis roots with an Elvis Presley lamp scored long ago from an upstate New York antiques shop. Her Rose Uniacke barstools are from Una Malan. Friends pile into Hale’s media room on Oscars night, but more often, “it is just me and the dogs watching a new documentary,” she says. Wardrobe styling by Jenna Filingeri. The result, three years in the making, is a regal revamp that, like the lady of the house, is full of new depth. “It’s romantic but edgy at the same time,” Drost says. “I don’t have a name for her,” Hale tells me of her house, but “she’s definitely a her.”Unabashed splashes of pink and aubergine abound, “like an eye shadow palette,” per Drost, from the muted, terra-cotta-colored Roman Clay walls in her primary bathroom to a skirted sofa with near-sensual curves in the living room that Hale, Drost, and Trohman likened to a rosy shade of Rare Beauty blush. Hale’s bedroom evokes the charm of a Parisian jewel box apartment, but what appears at first glance to be intricate molding is actually puffy linen wall covering by French firm Élitis.In the powder room, the floral pattern of an Anna Glover Studio wallpaper (Stotatsu Spring in Pistachio) is continued in a custom stained glass window by Ben Tuna, the Glass Cowboy. Vintage Kalmar sconces hang beside an antique mirror, both from 1stDibs, above a custom sink from Aegean Marble. The antique Art Deco Chinese rug is also from 1stDibs. The unstuffy dining room has a dining table by Christophe Delcourt with Collection Particulière from The Future Perfect, Caribou armchairs in beet leather from Ochre through David Sutherland, an Italian chandelier from 1stDibs, and textile artwork by Sarah Rosalena, sourced by Jordan Horowitz of Fairground Advisory. Guests entering the foyer are greeted by a lifesize sheep sculpture—recently named George by Hale’s mother—whose origins are as fuzzy as his coat: Trohman and Drost either acquired him from LA’s Rose Bowl Flea Market, or possibly the Czech Republic. He had been in Proem’s inventory for a period, but it was kismet when he made his way to Hale’s house. “I don’t know where he came from,” Hale says. “His foot is chipped. He’s old, but he’s perfect.” Cheeky art by Toyoshiro Murota reigns over the breakfast nook: “She is naked riding a horse, and someone is feeding her snacks,” Hale marvels.The moody cabinetry was inspired by Kirsten Dunst’s LA kitchen, designed by Proem-favorite designer Jane Hallworth. Antique scallop sconces from Collier Webb hang on the walls, and the antique runner is from Woven. A female sculpture by Agnes Baillon & Eric De Dormael from Obsolete—which Hale calls “Doris,” after her great-grandmother—sits on the counter. “She’s the guardian of the house,” Hale says. Hale journals and spots monarch butterflies outside from the breakfast nook. A custom Dedar woven-leather banquette by Landon Cole, designed by Proem, flanks a Kolho chair from The Future Perfect. The pendant lights are from Hector Finch. The artwork—Offering Flowers by Muroda Toyoshir—was acquired from Pierce & Ward in Los Angeles. Though she identifies as a “late bloomer,” saying her path, thus far, looks different than friends who are married and/or mothers, Hale is empowered by another kind of dream: that of a woman who not only owns her own home but is free to design it without a hint of compromise. “I want every corner of this house to make me excited,” Hale says. “That is such a cool place to be in.” For example, she repurposed the guest room, with its serene canyon views, into a minty-green office where she delves into scripts. In the meditation room, Hale keeps an altar to departed loved ones, and her collection of feathers and vintage Happy Meal toys. In the hallway, there are photos of her late grandmother, great-grandparents, and her father, Preston Hale, who died this past July.“It’s my way to honor them and always keep their memory vibrant,” Hale says. “I like saying hello to them.” After her dad’s passing, she cherishes a seat in the living room: “a white chair that I call ‘Dad’s chair.’ It’s where I sit to feel close to him.”A nubuck leather Paola Navone Paris bed from Baxter is situated only about a foot from the floor to accommodate easy access for Elvis and Ethel. Bedding includes custom antique tapestry pillows fabricated by Interior Specialties and designed by Proem, and a cashmere throw from RH. The 1950s Osvaldo Borsani for Tecno lounge chair and footstool are from 1stDibs, with a textured mohair rug from Woven. An Italian Art Nouveau chandelier from the 1900s from 1stDibs hangs in Hale’s primary bedroom. What appears at first glance to be romantic molding is unexpected linen wallpaper from Élitis that the actor describes as her favorite element in the house. The antique console is Hale’s own, along with two sketches from her collection. The painting is Baby I’m Yours by Jeanette Getrost. The watercolor scene is Painting on Canvas of Formal Garden by John Hulse. The walls in Hale’s primary bathroom are lined in Portola Roman Clay in Costes. A Monrovia copper bathtub from Magnus Home Products is surrounded by Fireclay Tile and an antique rug from Rug & Kilim. A medicine cabinet mirror by John Greene Design is mounted above a custom burl wood vanity with a Calacatta Oro marble top by Landon Cole, designed by Proem. The Art Deco brass-mounted Murano glass sconces are from 1stDibs. In the no-phones-allowed meditation room, there’s a tufted velvet daybed upholstered in a Dedar velvet from Pop Up Home, with custom vintage silk pillows by Paige Wassel and a vintage Ghashghai rug from Woven. The bathroom is tiled in Fish Scale Mosaic from My Moroccan Tile, with vintage sconces from 1stDibs and a curved wood vanity with a black marble top custom-made by Landon Cole, designed by Proem. Among Hale’s collected objects are antique figurines reminiscent of her dogs, Elvis, named after Elvis Presley, and Ethel, named after I Love Lucy’s Ethel Mertz. The walls in Hale’s office are covered in Portola Roman Clay in Birdie. The vintage desk is an ash wood dining table from South Loop Loft, with a black bird desk chair by Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm from 1stDibs, and a snake with pomegranate rug from Christopher Farr. A vintage Elvis Presley lamp reigns over the bar in the media room, where friends pile to watch the Oscars. (“If you’re from Memphis, you are hyperaware of Elvis Presley and Justin Timberlake,” she says.) Hale inherited a love of “the King” from her grandmother, who worked in the same building as Presley’s accountant: “According to her, Elvis kissed her once.” In a nod to her grandparents’ front door in Tennessee, she chose custom stained glass windows by LA-based artist Ben Tuna, a.k.a. the Glass Cowboy, for her whimsigoth powder room and the top of her tiled stairway. Every afternoon, sun pours through the glass at the top of Hale’s stairs and reflects off an aluminum window-blinds sculpture by another LA artist, Anne Libby, creating a celestial moment that never fails to give her chills.Hale hosts birthday parties for her Maltipoos, Elvis and Ethel, in the backyard of her Los Angeles home. “It is their palace,” she says. Hale is letting all the light in, basking in the home she’s made—and remade—for herself. “It feels like a true extension of me,” she says. “This house is helping support the woman I am today, but also who I’m going to be in the future. And I don’t know if this is the house I’ll be in forever, but I definitely know I will always own this house.“I live in LA, but I’m surrounded by nature,” Hale says. On the terrace, there’s a Four Hands Granger outdoor sofa, an aluminum coffee table from Harbour, a contemporary lounge chair in burnt wood by Carmworks, and tea light candle holders by Brassbell Company. Plants and planters were sourced from Plants & Spaces. The pool area has chaise longues from Harbour, a parasol umbrella from Paolo Lenti, and Gervasoni Next side tables by Paola Navone from 1stDibs.
