Love Island VIP star is convicted of raping contestant he was paired with on German TV show

Published: 06:54 EDT, 5 November 2026 | Updated: 07:00 EDT, 5 November 2026 A reality TV star has avoided prison after he was found guilty in Germany of raping his former girlfriend while filming the finale of a show. Yasin Mohamed, 35, met 30-year-old Sophie Imelmann on the German RTL2 dating show Love Island VIP in Greece in July 2024.The incident took place after the couple argued and went into separate rooms, Munich District Court heard. Ms Imelmann, an actress and influencer, later went to Mohamed's room to resolve their disagreement, where they initially kissed and engaged in consensual physical contact. But she told the court she had repeatedly made clear she did not want sexual intercourse because she feared becoming pregnant and contracting sexually transmitted diseases.Despite this, Mohamed allegedly penetrated her twice without a condom.Mohamed, a former professional basketball player, was convicted on Wednesday. He is now appealing the conviction.Ms Imelmann broke down in tears after the verdict, covering her face with her hands as the judge ruled that Mohamed had raped her despite her repeatedly saying she did not want sex. A rape is a rape.'Mohamed was handed a suspended prison sentence of one year and eight months and ordered to complete 200 hours of community service. He was also given a three-year probation period. The ruling was less severe than the two years and eight months demanded by prosecutors, who argued that Mohamed had ignored Ms Imelmann's refusal and had sex with her twice without a condom. The judge said the court was convinced that Mohamed, from Munich, had heard and understood her refusal but had continued regardless. The court described the circumstances as an 'unusual rape case', saying the encounter had involved 'very ambivalent behaviour' and taken place within what appeared to be a developing relationship. However, it stressed that this did not mean Ms Imelmann's refusal could be disregarded.Prosecutors argued that the fact the pair had consented to other intimate contact did not mean Ms Imelmann, from Cologne, had agreed to sex.The prosecutor said: 'The decisive point is that she did not want sexual intercourse. The defendant nevertheless had intercourse twice without a condom.'Ms Imelmann (pictured) is an actress and influencer from Cologne, Germany (Credit: @sophieimelmann/Harrisons) Ms Imelmann posted a photo with Mohamed on her social media in December 2024, where she publicly raised allegations against him for the first time (Credit: @sophieimelmann/Harrisons)Ms Imelmann's lawyer Abdou Gabbar also insisted that her refusal should have been respected, telling the court: 'No means no. Nothing more and nothing less.'The trial also heard about a secretly recorded conversation in which Mohamed discussed the encounter. Gabbar described one of his statements as a confession, saying: 'This is a confession, it couldn't be clearer.'However, Mohamed's defence interpreted the recording differently. His lawyer Alexander Esser quoted him as saying: 'You are so intertwined with each other - it's a game.'The defence maintained that Mohamed had believed the encounter was consensual and had not realised he was crossing Ms Imelmann's boundaries.Mohamed denied the rape allegation, while his lawyers called for him to be acquitted. Esser also accused Ms Imelmann of staging a 'media performance' by presenting herself on Instagram as the victim of a sexual offence. The judge rejected the defence's arguments and said the court believed Sophie's account. Before the verdict, Ms Imelmann told German newspaper BILD: 'I just want justice.'After the hearing, she said: 'I am incredibly relieved and at the end of my strength.'Mohamed's defence immediately announced it would appeal the conviction, meaning the verdict is not yet legally binding.
