The Louis Vuitton universe is constantly expanding. From its humble roots as a luggage-maker, the venerable Parisian maison’s catalog has grown to include a mind-boggling range of creations, from Air Force 1s and foosball tables to chopsticks and furniture. Interestingly, for all of the brand’s forays into sporty accessories, it has never put its iconic monogram on a car—until now. Today, Louis Vuitton announced a collab with famed customizer Singer Vehicle Design, which saw the brands team up to create a pair of one-of-a-kind Porsche 911s.According to Louis Vuitton watch director Jean Arnault, the collab sprang from a request by Singer, the SoCal-based customization shop renowned for turning vintage Porsche 911s into six- and seven-figure works of automotive art, for a dashboard clock. "In addition to the design and production of this clock by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton workshops in Switzerland, it quickly became apparent to us that this collaboration with Singer could extend to the personalization of every functional element of the vehicle, enhancing them through our expertise in leather craftsmanship and watchmaking,” Arnault says.Courtesy of Louis VuittonThe result is a “Classic” model Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer that’s ensconced in LV’s signature shades of saffron, cobalt blue and yellow, and a convertible Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer “Classic Turbo,” kitted out in Calcaire Lutétien white and sumptuous wood veneer trim by longtime women’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière. Per the original brief, the Classic features a detachable Louis Vuitton dashboard clock inspired by the brand’s Tambour collection—which doubles as a desk clock—plus a speedometer, rev counter and gauges executed in a similar style. This being LV’s first foray into automotive design, the maison’s designers considered every detail, adding a roof rack built to hold a trunk, a surfboard, or a pair of skis. The interior, meanwhile, is swathed in LV leather, with chromium-plated knobs, control switches, and air vents. The LV of it all doesn’t stop with the car itself, however. Each Louis Vuitton x Singer Porsche comes with its own custom luggage set and an outfit designed to complement the car’s materials and color palette. For the Classic coupe, there’s a racing jacket crafted from Millésime leather, a pair of cotton-and-silk denim jeans, and a choice of customized LV driving shoes or LV Remix Derbys. There’s also a pair of perforated leather gloves in a choice of natural leather or cobalt blue, and a calfskin-trimmed driver’s helmet. The Turbo convertible, meanwhile, takes a more feminine tack with a made-to-measure driving suit cut from parachute silk, braided leather gloves, and a pair of LV Sneakerinas (in addition to a monogrammed helmet).Impressive as all of that is, it barely touches on the level of detail that went into this collab, which drew from the considerable skills of LV’s craftspeople, from trunk makers to leather workers to watchmakers. It also doesn’t really speak to the automotive transcendence that is a Singer Porsche, each of which takes the better part of a year and 4,000 hours of meticulous craftsmanship to produce. The result is a vehicle destined to haunt the dreams of hypebeasts and gearheads alike, and a new genre on which the Parisian luxury juggernaut can put its famous stamp.
