Lou Koller, the longtime frontman of the hardcore punk rock band, has died following a two-year battle with esophageal cancer, his bandmates confirmed. He was 59. “It’s with unbelievable sadness that we announce to our worldwide hardcore family the passing of our brother Lou Koller,” the band—including Koller’s brother Pete Koller, Armand Majidi and Craig Setari—wrote on Instagram July 24. “The level of loss that we feel at this time is overwhelming.” “We have lost a beloved friend and an iconic frontman,” the statement added. “Lou had the power to raise everyone’s spirits at our shows with a smile and a sarcastic comment, and he won people over wherever we played, from every culture and every corner of the world.” Koller shared in June 2024 that doctors found a cancerous tumor in his esophagus that extended into his stomach. Following the heartbreaking announcement, Sick of It All was forced cancel its European tour while he underwent treatment, prompting the hardcore community to rally with benefit concerts and donations.Though Koller announced in May 2025 that he was cancer-free following a final round of chemotherapy, the disease returned months later. “At this time of intense grief, we must again acknowledge the great help and support offered by everyone who donated to Lou’s medical fund,” the band continued. “You all helped Lou feel very special and very loved as he battled away these last two years.”Photo by Chiaki Nozu/FilmMagic“His battle is over now and he can finally rest,” they added. “Hopefully he can somehow still see and feel the beautiful, positive mark he left on the world.” Koller and his brother formed Sick of It All alongside drummer Majidi in Queens, New York, in 1986. Three years later, the group released its 1989 debut Blood, Sweat and No Tears before Setari—the band’s bassist—joined in 1993.
