lots of hands are adding some more hands to the mix. Following the release of their Fire Talk debut into a pretty room early last year; the unexpected TikTok virality of their 2020 track "mistake"; US tours with Hudson Freeman, Lala Lala, and Deadharrie; and the new single "Grapevine"; the 22-year-old Newcastle-upon-Tyne duo of Billy Woodhouse and Elliot Dryden are recording in a proper studio with an outsider producer for the first time ever. That producer is Mike O'Malley, the guitarist for fellow capitalization-averse experimentalists caroline who also worked on My New Band Believe's excellent debut. Together, they've made "anything for now," which ups the studio polish without losing any of lots of hands' usual shaggy eccentric charm. Woodhouse explains:This song has been through about 4 stages. It started as 3 different tracks me and Elliot worked on individually, before combining them. We recorded this version down in London next to the best pastry shop we’ve ever been to. Such a luxury to have this experience, and meet Mike from caroline who really took this song to a different level.O’Malley adds:I was tasked with the pleasure of choosing a track to work on from a big list of really beautiful songs. "anything for now" stood out to me as a track that would be nice to work on as it had a really distinct sonic identity already, and it was a super well-written song. We built the whole thing from scratch in Park Chapel Studios in North London in one day — somewhere I always like to work because the live room sounds really good —and the engineer there, Joe, is a good friend and a talented person. It can be a really fun task taking a track that’s clearly already very developed and just exploding outwards into "studio" territory. Elliot waited patiently all day to record his vocals and did each layer in basically one take, flawlessly, right at the end of the day.Listen to "anything for now" below.
