Most-played games range from Clair Obscur to Civ to Elden Ring to Halo 2 and beyond. The Lord of the Rings has quite a few new projects in the works, although not all of them are moving forward as quickly as fans might have hoped. Andy Serkis' The Hunt for Gollum is on the horizon, while Stephen Colbert's planned Shadow of the Past recently faced some development delays due to the Paramount merger, despite assurances that the film is still being written. Meanwhile, Middle-earth has seen a wave of great news on the gaming front, with Aspyr recently bringing back War in the North through its new Legacy Edition, alongside Nintendo Switch 2 releases of Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. More classic game revivals are also planned, while Kingdom Come: Deliverance developer Warhorse Studios is working on an ambitious new open-world Lord of the Rings RPG. Fortunately, fans won't have to wait for all these upcoming projects to get another taste of Tolkien's universe. As of October 28, Wolves of Mordor is officially available to check out now (via LOTRO), bringing another adventure to Middle-earth and taking fans on a "journey beyond Gorgoroth." The newest Lord of the Rings adventure isn't a standalone game, but a massive new expansion for The Lord of the Rings Online. The Wolves of Mordor officially launched on October 28, marking the MMORPG's 14th expansion since its original release in 2007, following a brief delay from its original October 21 target. Set after Sauron's defeat in the War of the Ring, the story follows the Free Peoples as they discover that some of the Dark Lord's most dangerous servants are still lurking in Middle-earth. Players venture beyond Gorgoroth into Draugardh, where a sinister new threat has emerged. The expansion's new Epic Story, "...and the Verses of Victory," begins with Ranger Orthonn outside the stables of Minas Tirith (Midsummer) and requires a level 160 character. There's plenty to discover outside the main storyline, too, with more than 200 quests, 90 deeds, and 30 Missions. Here's a full breakdown of the expansion's key features: New Epic Story: Journey beyond Gorgoroth, where a wolf-wraith long thought bound, has been set loose. Gather unlikely allies and uncover the secrets hidden in Mordor’s forgotten corners. The Hidden Lands of Mordor: Explore the uncharted wilds of Draugardh across three new regions: Heledhris, scorched by Mount Doom; the jagged plains of Parth Rhavas; and the shrouded forests of Nan Ogol. The Feared Beasts of Draugardh: Players will face were-wolves, wolf-revering Easterlings and the long-forgotten figures in the far reaches of Mordor. Harden Your Survival Instincts: Learn Tactics, Lessons, Skills, and Enhancements from the people who call this dangerous region home, then mix and match them to build your own playstyle across all your characters on the server. Neighbours: Housing grows closer with Neighbours, companions who can move to your home and grow into real friendships through stories, gifts, and daily missions, each one shaped by twenty personality traits and a dynamic mood system that makes no two bonds alike. The expansion is available in three different editions, with additional cosmetic rewards, character upgrades, and housing bonuses included in the more expensive bundles: Standard Edition ($39.99): Includes the expansion, a “Were-hunter” title and two Neighbours. Collector’s Edition ($79.99): Adds the “Dauntless” cosmetic set, character boosts and a third Neighbour. Ultimate Fan Bundle ($129.99): Adds the “Were-wolf Hunter’s” cosmetic set, the Scar the Hunter’s Hound pet, a fourth Neighbour, a housing teleport, shared storage slots, an XP boost and more. The Lord of the Rings Online is available exclusively on Windows PC through Steam and the official LOTRO website, where the base game can be downloaded for free. The Wolves of Mordor is a paid expansion, however, and there are currently no PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch versions of the MMORPG available.
