Live: Opposition uproar in Lok Sabha as govt says Home Minister ready to respond

Parliament Monsoon SessionParliament Monsoon Session Live Updates: With just four days left in the Monsoon session, the government faces uncertainty over the passage of key legislation on women’s reservation, delimitation and FCRA, with none of the three listed for consideration in the Lok Sabha on Monday. The continuing Opposition protests over the NEET paper leak and police action against protesting students have brought Parliament close to a washout. The government’s attempts to build support for the women’s quota and delimitation bills have yielded mixed results. While the Shiromani Akali Dal has backed both, Congress and several key Opposition parties, including the DMK, remain opposed to the delimitation proposal. Congress has also firmly opposed the FCRA Amendment Bill, with KC Venugopal warning of protests if the government attempts to push it through in the remaining days. The government is also short of the two-thirds majority required for a constitutional amendment. The women’s reservation and delimitation bill was defeated in April after securing 298 votes against 230, and even after the NDA's strength increased marginally to 299, it remains well below the 360 votes currently needed. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju held multiple meetings and conversations with Rahul Gandhi to break the deadlock, but Congress sought an all-party meeting on the proposed legislation instead.
