Counting is underway under tight security at designated centres in both constituencies. Officials began with postal ballots and Electronically Transmitted Postal Ballots (ETPBs), before moving on to votes cast through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). The counting process is being conducted in two halls in each constituency and is scheduled to conclude in 15 rounds. Separate halls have been designated for postal ballots and ETPB votes. The bypoll results will not affect the state government, as the BJP won 207 of the 294 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Both constituencies recorded high voter turnout on Tuesday, with Nandigram registering 80.89 per cent polling and Rejinagar recording 80.08 per cent. The Election Commission described polling as “more or less peaceful”. Opposition parties, however, alleged voter intimidation, irregularities at polling booths and the removal of their polling agents. They also demanded fresh polling in the affected areas. The BJP rejected the allegations, maintaining that voting had been peaceful. In Rejinagar, a confrontation between police and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir, followed by his arrest, emerged as one of the major flashpoints during polling. The bypoll was necessitated after Kabir vacated the seat while retaining Nowda. The results are being closely watched for an indication of the BJP's electoral standing after it ended the Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule in West Bengal. The contests are also significant amid divisions within the TMC and the presence of multiple political formations in the opposition space. In Nandigram, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had defeated TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 Assembly elections. He won the constituency again in 2026 before retaining Bhabanipur, necessitating the bypoll. The BJP has fielded Hasirani Rath, while Congress candidate Milan Pradhan has the backing of the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC faction after its nominee withdrew. A rival TMC faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee is also contesting the seat. In Rejinagar, the contest features BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar, TMC nominee Rabiul Alam Chowdhury, rival TMC candidate Safiuzzaman Saikh, Congress candidate Mohammad Abdullahil Kafi, CPI(M) candidate Syed Asad Ali and AJUP nominee Golam Nabi Azad, son of Humayun Kabir.
