The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed AI-enabled cameras in Mahim to detect littering and issue immediate audio warnings. The pilot has drawn support alongside calls for penalties against persistent offenders.Littering in Mumbai? These new AI cameras won’t just watch, they’ll warn you too (Photos: @mybmc/X)The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has turned to artificial intelligence to discourage people from dumping garbage in public spaces, installing smart cameras that can detect littering and issue an immediate audio warning to offenders.Sharing a video of the initiative on its official X account, the civic body said its G/North ward had introduced the technology at Gajanan Vatika on Dr Raykar Marg in Mahim, one of the city's garbage-vulnerable points (GVPs).The clip showed a man in a dark shirt and light-coloured trousers walking along a roadside lined with parked vehicles, trees and buildings. He then bent down and placed a green plastic bag on the ground before walking away. The video subsequently switched to a CCTV view, where green boxes tracked the man's movements in real time, demonstrating how the AI-powered system detected his activity. The camera identified people approaching the location with the apparent intention of dumping waste and immediately issued an appeal through a loudspeaker, asking them to keep the area clean and avoid littering. The civic body said it planned to install similar AI-enabled cameras at several other locations across Mumbai in the coming days.
