Lioness Season 4 Is No Sure Thing Just Yet

3 min readLIONESS WAS NOT Taylor Sheridan’s first rodeo when it came to weaving A-listers into his ever-expanding television universe, but it just might be his strongest ensemble of stars yet.Zoe Saldaña was announced as the spy show’s lead character, Joe McNamara, a CIA agent guiding a team of female operatives known as the Lionesses, back in 2022. She has since been named the highest-grossing film actor of all time through her starring roles in Avatar and the MCU. The Oscar winner is also the first actress to have four films earn over $2 billion globally. She serves as an executive producer alongside Nicole Kidman, who appears in the show as Joe’s CIA boss Kaitlyn Meade. Sheridan also recruited Morgan Freeman to play U.S. Secretary of State Edwin Mullins. The show’s third season kicked off with Joe’s CIA team capturing Russian operative Aleksi Yurimov after getting a tip from mole Oleksandra Balakin (played by Elizaveta Neretin). Yet, she is eventually kidnapped, launching her team into action in order to bring her back safely.Joe manages to escape in the penultimate episode. “I’m gonna figure out who is behind this, and I’m gonna kill them,” she vows. Theories, both on the show and in fan forums, suspect Joe’s captors as possibly being Russia, Iran, Ukraine, or even someone close to home. Before the tense season finale, which premiered early Sunday morning, one Reddit user speculated that a vengeful Aaliyah (the daughter of season 1’s target, played by Stephanie Nur) could be the mastermind behind the move to take Joe.The cast members also teased a dramatic cliffhanger that would leave viewers clamoring to see what’s next. Actress Laysla De Oliveira, who plays Cruz Manuelos, hinted in an interview with ScreenRant that fans “won’t want [the show] to end.”Now that the dust has partially settled on season 3 of Lioness, here’s everything fans can expect from the future season.Stream Lioness HereHas Lioness been renewed for Season 4? Ryan GreenParamount+ has yet to announce a renewal for Lioness, but the future of the spy thriller seems bright.Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby, was willing to bet on the certainty of another season. “We’re going to get a season 4. We will, we will,” the actress told ScreenRant. “When people see what [Sheridan] wrote for the finale, we are getting a season 4. Or I will pay you $100.”Writer Michael Idov also shared on Instagram (via MovieWeb) that he’s joined the Lioness team, seemingly suggesting that the crew is already getting to work on season 4. “Lily and I have joined LIONESS, Taylor Sheridan’s global smash hit, as writers and supervising producers. An honor, chance, and challenge of a lifetime to write for the likes of Zoe Saldaña, Nicole Kidman, and Morgan Freeman. See you in the trenches,” he wrote. The numbers are also strongly in the show’s favor for a renewal. Paramount shared last month that the Lioness season 3 premiere outperformed season 2’s debut with 7.1 million viewers tuning in.Who will be in the Lioness season 4 cast?Emerson MillerAlthough Lioness has not officially been renewed, most of the cast—including Saldaña, Kidman, De Oliveira, Freeman, Wagner, Michael Kelly, Dave Annable, Thad Luckinbill, and more—should be expected to return if it does get the green light. There has been some speculation that Lioness’s next season might find De Oliveira’s character Cruz having an even stronger presence. Considering the show started with Joe taking Cruz under her wing, there’s a chance that the leader of the Lionesses could pass the torch."I think she's incredibly smart,” De Oliveira told MovieWeb about Cruz’s trajectory. “Taylor [Sheridan] described her, and I agree with him completely: 'She's a wild cat with a heart of gold.' And so seeing how she approaches a higher position of authority with those dynamics is really interesting. It certainly seems like it's heading in that direction. I think she will be surprised when she finds herself there."When will Lioness Season 4 be released? Ryan GreenLioness season 3 started production in October 2025 and ended filming in March, just a few months before the August premiere. However, prior seasons of Lioness have filmed on different timelines rather than a consistent pattern.Slight challenges could emerge as the production tries to juggle Kidman and Saldaña’s busy schedules, as well as Sheridan working on Landman and writing the forthcoming Call of Duty movie. Because of this, fans could get a new season in late 2027, or even sometime in 2028.Lexi Lane is a culture writer. Her work has previously appeared in NBC News, Variety, and more.
