In addition to some significant performance improvements for FAT32 in Linux 7.4, more performance improvements are on the way. For what will likely land in Linux 7.5 is up to a 4.06x improvement demonstrated for this aging file-system. Open-source developer Matheus Alves de Almeida worked on support for batching synchronous mirror writes with FAT32. The new code improves performance on synchronous mounts by batching FAT mirror writes and improving the submission process. Due to the Linux FAT driver currently synchronizing buffer-by-buffer on synchronous mounts, the I/O is serialized and performance suffering. Benchmarks done on FAT32 with a synchronous mount show up to a 4.06x improvement: The patch is currently in Andrew Morton's mm-everything branch. Thus given the timing and going through MM qualifications, it looks like it could land in the new year for Linux 7.5.
