Lindsay Clancy Jury Deadlocked: Cable News Coverage Goes Wall-To-Wall In Triple-Murder Trial

Coverage of Lindsay Clancy’s triple-murder trial went full screen on cable news Tuesday as the jury announced they were deadlocked after several days of deliberations. One day after a guilty verdict was reached in the highly covered Tupac Shakur murder trial in a Las Vegas court, a Massachusetts panel of nine women and three men informed Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan that they are unable to reach a decision. The news immediately sent Fox News, CNN, the BBC and others into breaking news mode with coverage of the case of the former nurse who has admitted to killing her three children in early 2023. After hearing of the jury’s quagmire, Judge Sullivan sent the panel back to further deliberate in the hopes of reaching a verdict. The judge’s remarks to the courtroom were shown live on networks such as Fox. If the jurors are unable to come to a unanimous verdict, the Clancy case could be called as a mistrial — and this whole legal process could start over again. Outlets have gone live to the courtroom on numerous occasions, hosted a plethora of panels and segments and provided a constant flow of updates even before the jurors went behind closed doors last week. On CNN’s coverage Tuesday morning, anchor Wolf Blitzer explained to viewers in clinical detail the Intricacies of postpartum psychosis. While both prosecutors and the defense acknowledge Clancy had postpartum and other maternal mental health issues months before she strangled Cora, 5; Dawson, 3; and Callan, 8 months, the local D.A. has argued the 39-year-old is “criminally responsible.” After sending her now ex-husband out on errands and killing her children, Clancy cut herself and tried to kill herself. Though unsuccessful, Clancy’s jump from a second story window that January 24, 2023 day has left her partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair. Clancy entered a plea of not guilty in the trial. She faces life behind bars if found guilty. There is also the possibility she could be placed in a care facility for decades under strict observation. Of course, if found not guilty, Clancy could be released and allowed to live her life in freedom. Though Clancy herself did not testify in the five-week long trial, attorney Kevin Reddington and the rest of the defense team have insisted their client was in the thrall of postpartum psychosis. To that, the argument is that she had no control over her fatal actions despite the clear planning of the horrible event. In fact, after the birth of Callan, Clancy sought out treatment for her mental health and had a stint in a psychiatric hospital. Over 600,000 women a year in America are afflicted with postpartum depression in America, research shows. According to the Centers for Disease Control, complications of postpartum depression and anxiety are now the leading cause of pregnancy-related death in the United States. In that context, and with often vitriolic discourse online over the case, the 12-member jury and six alternates in the Clancy trial were given a variety of options from which to choose a verdict. Respectively, Clancy could be found guilty of first-degree murder, guilty of second-degree murder, and guilty of manslaughter charges. She could also be determined not guilty by lack of criminal responsibility and simply not guilty.
