She survived but was left paralyzed. Her attorney, Kevin Reddington, argued that Clancy was suffering from postpartum psychosis during the killings and should be found not guilty by reason of insanity.DEFENCE ARGUES POSTPARTUM PSYCHOSISReddington portrayed Clancy as a loving mother whose mental health deteriorated after the birth of her third child. Family members, including her now ex-husband Patrick Clancy, testified about her struggles in the months before the killings. She repeatedly sought treatment from healthcare providers and was prescribed several medications.Patrick Clancy also testified that his wife had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital less than two weeks before the deaths and appeared to show no indication that she intended to harm herself or the children.He said she appeared to have a "normal" demeanor when he left home to pick up dinner.PROSECUTORS CHALLENGE INSANITY CLAIMProsecutors acknowledged that Clancy had experienced mental health problems but argued that she understood the wrongfulness of killing her children and deliberately carried out the acts.A psychologist who examined Clancy testified that she had planned to kill herself and believed her children would suffer without her.Prosecutors pointed to evidence that Clancy had sent her husband out to collect food and visit a pharmacy after using her phone to calculate how long it would take him to return home.When Patrick returned, he found Clancy injured in the backyard. She told him she had attempted suicide and directed him to the basement, where he discovered the children with exercise bands around their necks.CLAIMS OF HEARING A MAN'S VOICESeveral witnesses, including Patrick Clancy, testified that Clancy later described hearing a man's voice while she was in hospital.According to the testimony, she said the voice told her that if she did not act, she would lose her chance.The defence used the testimony as part of its argument that Clancy was experiencing a severe psychotic episode when the killings occurred.CASE DRAWS COMPARISONS TO ANDREA YATESThe trial also drew comparisons with the case of Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned her five children in 2001.Yates was initially convicted of murder, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.
