Letter: Hawaii leaders too eager to spend funds on new toys

Thanks to Dave Shapiro for writing with humor what I’ve been thinking (“Holes in the roof and pools expose holes in our heads,” Star-Advertiser, Volcanic Ash, April 5). The ponds around the state Capitol and the three-story fountain at the Hawai‘i Convention Center were lovely when first installed, but maintenance costs became too much and, unsurprisingly, the systems failed.
